Preventing Labyrinthitis Ossificans [PDF]

open access: closedArchives of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery, 2001
To identify a possible relationship between the administration of steroids at the time of diagnosis of bacterial meningitis and the development of labyrinthitis ossificans.Retrospective analysis of the charts of 38 children requiring cochlear implantation who presented with bacterial meningitis and then developed bilateral profound deafness.

Labyrinthitis Ossificans

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1977
Three cases with postinflammatory inner ear sequelae are presented to illustrate unusual histopathologic changes. Endolymphatic hydrops without change in the perilymphatic system was present in one ear following “influenza” meningitis and labyrinthitis ossificans in the contralateral ear.

Radiologic Diagnosis of Labyrinthitis Ossificans

open access: closedAnnals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1979
Labyrinthitis ossificans is the pathological ossification of the membranous labyrinthine spaces in response to processes which are destructive of the membranous labyrinth or the endosteum of the otic capsule. It has been primarily a histopathologic diagnosis.

Labyrinthitis Ossificans

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 2015
Introduction: It has been suggested that remodeling of the otic capsule is highly suppressed by the action of anti-resorptive signals emanating from structures of the inner ear space. Labyrinthitis ossificans (LO) is a severe complication to bacterial meningitis and is characterized by destruction of inner ear structures by the formation of new bone ...

Labyrinthitis Ossificans Due to Chronic Otitis Media

open access: closedAnnals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1975
Histopathology of two cases of unilateral labyrinthitis ossificans in the presence of bilateral chronic suppurative otitis media is presented. In both cases, ossification and fibrosis were limited to the scala tympani of the lower basal turn, apparently due to inflammation entering through the round window membrane.

The incidence of tympanogenic labyrinthitis ossificans

The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 2014
AbstractObjective:To estimate the incidence of tympanogenic labyrinthitis ossificans. Methods:The records of patients treated with mastoidectomy for various tympanogenic aetiologies from January 2007 to December 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients whose high-resolution computed tomography scans showed evidence of labyrinthine calcification of ...

Otopathologic Analysis of Patterns of Postmeningitis Labyrinthitis Ossificans

Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, 2020
ObjectiveLabyrinthitis ossificans (LO) may occur following meningitis and, in cases where cochlear implantation is indicated, complicate electrode insertion. LO is critical to identify for successful cochlear implantation, and histopathology is more sensitive than imaging for identification of LO. Herein we utilize otopathologic techniques to study the

Labyrinthitis ossificans: Histopathologic consideration for cochlear implantation

open access: closedOtolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, 1991
Labyrinthitis ossificans may be a hindrance to cochlear implantation by making electrode insertion difficult. We performed a histopathologic study of 24 temporal bones with labyrinthitis ossificans from multiple causes. The organ of Corti was graphically reconstructed and the degree of obstruction was estimated for each millimeter of the cochlea ...

Histopathology of Labyrinthitis Ossificans From an Intralabyrinthine Surgical Specimen

Otology & Neurotology, 2022
Objective Histologic characterization of labyrinthitis ossificans (LO) has mostly been limited to postmortem samples. In this report, we describe the histology of LO from a surgical specimen obtained from a patient undergoing labyrinthectomy with simultaneous cochlear implantation. Patient
