Summertime precipitation deficits in the southern Peruvian highlands since 1964

Precipitation deficits in the southern Peruvian highlands often occur during El Niño events, but not all El Niño events lead to droughts. El Niño events with droughts show stronger upper‐level zonal wind anomalies, whereas El Niño events without droughts do not show such anomalies. Atmospheric simulations suggest that also the flavour of El Niño events
