Lack of Compliance in Gillnet Fisheries Regulations Increases Risk to a Vulnerable Species

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article presents an analysis of regulatory compliance in a Brazilian gillnet fishery, based on Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) tracking data. Satellite transmissions records, interpreted as proxies for gillnet haulings events, were analyzed and classified using a neural network to assess the level of compliance of the gillnet fleet.

Identification of palynomorphs sampled from a sedimentary profile of the last 5000 years in Lagoa dos Patos, Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. [PDF]

open access: yesActa Botânica Brasílica
Lagoa dos Patos, the largest lagoon in South America, lies on the coastal plain of Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil. This region forms a transition area between the tropical and subtropical zones of South America.

Trophic Niche Overlap Between the Invasive Crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould, 1841) and Native Crab Species in the Southwest Atlantic Coast

open access: yesMarine Ecology, Volume 47, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
ABSTRACT The introduction of exotic species is one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss in aquatic ecosystems. The Harris mud crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii, native to the Atlantic coast of North America, was recorded in the Patos Lagoon estuary (southern Brazil) in the 1980s, likely introduced via ballast water. However, the effects of this invader

Effects of the burrowing crab Chasmagnathus granulata (Dana) on meiofauna of estuarine intertidal habitats of Patos Lagoon, Southern Brazil

open access: yesBrazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, 2005
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the burrowing crab Chasmagnathus granulata on meiofauna at three intertidal habitats across a tidal exposure gradient (i.e., an emerged salt marsh, an emerged mudflat and a submerged mudflat) in an estuarine ...

Morphology and ecology of Thalassiosira Cleve (Bacillariophyta) species rarely recorded in Brazilian coastal waters

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
The detailed description of rarely recorded Thalassiosira species in Brazil is presented with light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) illustrations. A total of 78 phytoplankton net samples (20 µm) collected between the years 2000 and

Sediment budget of a cuspate shoreline and its influence on spit development—Lagoa dos Patos, Brazil

open access: yesGeo-Marine Letters, 2022
The coastal sediment budget is an essential tool to understand erosion/accretion patterns along coastlines and to predict future changes. This work is one of the first approaches of a coastal sediment budget study in a cuspate shoreline covering the whole embayment-spit system.

The role of cuspate spits on wave attenuation and energy redistribution in a coastal lagoon, Lagoa dos Patos, Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesGeo-Marine Letters, 2020
This research uses a process-based model (Delft3D), validated with measured wave data, to investigate the controls that a cuspate shoreline and its associated submerged morphology have on wave generation, propagation, and attenuation within a large elongated lagoon (Lagoa dos Patos, Brazil).

A modeling study of Patos lagoon (Brazil) flow response to idealized wind and river discharge: dynamical analysis

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Oceanography, 2006
A three-dimensional numerical model is used to investigate the Patos Lagoon flow response to idealized northeasterly winds and river inflow. North of Ponta da Feitoria, in the central lagoon, the main balance in the alongshore direction at steady state ...

A pesca artesanal dos bagres no estuário da Lagoa dos Patos/RS: um debate sobre uma gestão pesqueira ancorada na injustiça ambiental

open access: yesDesenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente, 2018
This study addresses the issues related to the catfish fishing ban in the estuary of Patos Lagoon/RS. Considered to be of great importance to artisanal fishers, the catfish were included in the list of endangered species, therefore a fishing ban was ...
