A Lagrangian camel

open access: yesCommentarii Mathematici Helvetici, 1999
We prove the Lagrangian analogue of the symplectic camel theorem: there are compact Lagrangian submanifolds of {\Bbb R}^{2n} that cannot be moved through a small hole by a global Hamiltonian isotopy with compact support.

Applying Dynamics/Cost Parameter Continuation to the Optimal Guidance of Variable‐Speed Unicycle

open access: yesOptimal Control Applications and Methods, EarlyView.
(a) Classical parameter continuation method diverges. (b) Dynamics/cost parameter continuation method converges. ABSTRACT The problem of a variable‐speed unicycle guidance to the stationary target is considered. The vehicle should be guided to the origin while minimizing the energy loss due to the induced drag.

Numerical Simulations of Very Low Velocity Impacts and Ignition of an Explosive Confined by a Thin Case

open access: yesPropellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics, EarlyView.
A low‐speed impact (around one meter per second) of a metallic tip on an explosive confined by a thin plate is simulated. The heat due to friction between the tip and the plate and the one due to the deformation of the plate are not transfered to the ignited zone.

Mesoscale dynamics of cyclone Leslie (2018): A diagnostic analysis of a rare Iberian landfall

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study presents a successful numerical simulation of cyclone Leslie (2018), using WRF‐ARW v4.5.1. Several mesoscale dynamics were identified indicative of the occurrence of sting jet and cold conveyor belt, which potentiated the record‐breaking winds in central Portugal.

Characteristics of diabatically influenced cyclones with high wind damage potential in Europe

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Diabatic processes contribute, on average, 26% to the intensification of European winter storms, with diabatically driven cyclones exhibiting steeper deepening rates, stronger wind gusts, and increased precipitation. These storms are linked to enhanced warm conveyor belt (WCB) activity and develop in a warmer environment with elevated lower ...

Unconstrained Lagrangian formulation for bosonic continuous spin theory in flat spacetime of arbitrary dimension

open access: yesNuclear Physics B
We have discovered two unconstrained forms of free Lagrangian for continuous spin(CS) theory in arbitrary flat spacetime dimension for bosonic case. These Lagrangians, unlike that by Schuster and Toro, do not include delta functions and are conventional.
