Turbulence‐resolving simulations of Hurricane Laura (2020): Insights into extreme winds and eyewall turbulence

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Using high‐resolution turbulence‐resolving simulations, we analyze the wind structure in the eyewall of Hurricane Laura (2020) and validate the results with observational data. Our findings show significant variations in wind speed and turbulence, especially above 50 m.

Disentangling the near‐surface physical processes from the synoptic‐dynamics in heatwaves using a single column model and trajectory analysis

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The warm advection associated with a nocturnal jet and high initial temperature profile at 0000 h local standard time turn warm days (WDs) to hot days (HDs). HDs and heatwaves (HWs) have similar physical processes. The slower‐moving upper‐level anticyclone gives HWs their longevity.

The impact of Arctic sea‐ice loss on winter weather in the British Isles

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Arctic sea‐ice loss shifts the North Atlantic jet and storm track equatorward, and results in a more negative North Atlantic Oscillation and more positive East Atlantic and Scandinavian patterns. Strong extratropical cyclones weaken and become less frequent for the British Isles, but there is model disagreement for precipitation, surface winds, and ...
