Evaporation and Cold Pools Beneath Trade Cumulus Clouds

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 13, 16 July 2026.
Abstract The sources of air and water vapor in the tropical trade‐wind Atlantic subcloud boundary layer (SBL) are analyzed using in situ measurements of temperature, specific humidity, and stable water isotopologues (HDO and H218O) from shipboard observations in January‐February 2020.

A Nonlinear Lagrangian Approach to Constrained Optimization Problems

SIAM Journal on Optimization, 2001
Summary: We study nonlinear Lagrangian functions for constrained optimization problems which are, in general, nonlinear with respect to the objective function. We establish an equivalence between two types of zero duality gap properties, which are described using augmented Lagrangian dual functions and nonlinear Lagrangian dual functions, respectively.

A Lagrangian approach to bungee jumping

open access: yesPhysics Education, 2020
Abstract The fact that a bungee jumper can reach an acceleration greater than the acceleration of gravity is, also from a physics point of view, intriguing. Taking only gravity into account, it can be explained by applying conservation of energy or by deriving carefully the equation of motion in a Newtonian approach.

A Lagrangian Approach to Optimal Design

Biometrika, 1974
where u is a column vector of k components and prime denotes transpose. The D-optimal design problem is to determine a A which maximizes log det M(A). Now log det is a concave function on the set of nonnegative-definite symmetric matrices and so the D-optimal problem can be regarded as a particular case of the following one, which we shall call the qs ...

Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian approaches to electrodynamics including supersymmetry

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2007
We take a general approach to nonlinear electrodynamics that includes non‐Lagrangian as well as Lagrangian theories. We introduce the constitutive tensors which, together with Maxwell's equations, describe nonlinear electrodynamics in an extremely general way.

An Approach to the Eulerian-Lagrangian Problem

Journal of Mathematical Physics, 1962
The generalization is developed, for n functions of n variables, of the Kac-Rice theorem on the occurrence of zeros of a random function, and is applied to a particular kind of vector integral equation in a single independent variable (time) by discretizing the time axis.

Learn the Lagrangian: A Vector-Valued RKHS Approach to Identifying Lagrangian Systems

IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, 2016
We study the modeling of Lagrangian systems with multiple degrees of freedom. Based on system dynamics, canonical parametric models require ad hoc derivations and sometimes simplification for a computable solution; on the other hand, due to the lack of prior knowledge in the system's structure, modern nonparametric models in machine learning face the ...

Lagrangian Approach for Bounded Plasmas

Physica Scripta, 2004
Lagrangian variables are used to describe both surface and volume nonlinear oscillations of spatially bounded plasmas. Simple exact, or nonperturbative, solutions can often be obtained for complicated problems. Here, several recent analytical results on nonlinear standing waves in bounded systems are reviewed.
