Lake ice phenology from AVHRR data for European lakes: An automated two-step extraction method

open access: yesRemote Sensing of Environment, 2016
Several lake ice phenology studies from satellite data have been undertaken. However, the availability of long-term lake freeze-thaw-cycles, required to understand this proxy for climate variability and change, is scarce for European lakes. Long time series from space observations are limited to few satellite sensors.

Huckleberry Habitat and Its Influence on Two Small Populations of Grizzly Bears (Ursus arctos)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
We modeled habitat of an important seasonal food item for two Threatened (United States Endangered Species Act) populations of grizzly bears. Our findings suggest that huckleberry habitat is not limiting but does have the potential to influence population density, dispersal/range expansion, energetics, and body size.

Environmental DNA Reflects Differences in Freshwater Habitat Use Between Two Pacific Salmonids at Fine Temporal Scales

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 1, January–February 2026.
A year‐long eDNA survey was conducted in two Canadian rivers to track changes in Chinook and coho salmon freshwater habitat occupancy. eDNA concentrations were aligned with known migratory and spawning patterns, with Chinook signals peaking earlier than coho. These findings highlight eDNA as a temporally sensitive tool for monitoring salmon life stages

Phenology of alpine zooplankton populations and the importance of lake ice-out

open access: yesJournal of Plankton Research, 2020
AbstractThe prolonged ice cover inherent to alpine lakes incurs unique challenges for aquatic life, which are compounded by recent shifts in the timing and duration of ice cover. To understand the responses of alpine zooplankton, we analyzed a decade (2009–2019) of open-water samples of Daphnia pulicaria and Hesperodiaptomus shoshone for growth ...

Climate Change and Eutrophication: A Short Review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Water resources are vital not only for human beings but essentially all ecosystems. Human health is at risk if clean drinking water becomes contaminated.

Effects of temporal and spatial variability in energy fluxes on phytoplankton

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 71, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Climate change has significantly altered the energy dynamics of lakes; however, little is known of how the temporal and spatial variation in energy fluxes impacts the structure and function of lake ecosystems. This study combined long‐term (2011–2018) measurements of lake energy fluxes with environmental, nutrient, and phytoplankton data at ...

Climate change effects on spawning phenology in a coolwater fish, the yellow perch (Perca flavescens) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Understanding how the timing (or phenology) of important life history events, such as reproduction, are controlled by ambient temperature is a major focus of climate change research.

Variability in apple fruit quality across management systems and latitudinal climate gradients

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 1, Page 212-230, January 2026.
As the world transitions to more sustainable agricultural practices to combat environmental damage, it is important to investigate how different management systems shape the quality and nutrition of our crops. We analyzed apples from paired organic and conventional sites across the western United States.

Conservation challenges and opportunities for native apple (Malus) species in Canada

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 1, Page 134-156, January 2026.
Apple, one of the world's most widely cultivated and economically important fruit crops, has two wild relatives native to Canada. In this review, we describe the importance of these native apple species to Indigenous heritage and the current threats the species faces due to pests, diseases, and habitat loss.
