Impacts of Climate Change on Physical Characteristics of Lakes in Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
One of the tasks of the EEWAI action is the assessment of the impacts of climate change on ecological water quality in order to support the implementation of the Water Framework Directive.

Cold hardiness dynamics predict budbreak and associated low‐temperature threats in grapevine

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 250, Issue 4, Page 2203-2220, May 2026.
Summary Dormant buds of temperate woody perennial plants must attain cold hardiness to survive winters and timely lose it in spring to break bud while avoiding damage from low temperatures and late frosts. Therefore, we asked: Can a cold hardiness model be used to predict budbreak?

Environmental impacts — Lake ecosystems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The North Sea region contains a vast number of lakes; from shallow, highly eutrophic water bodies in agricultural areas to deep, oligotrophic systems in pristine high-latitude or high-altitude areas.

Influence of Atmospheric Rivers on Lake Ice Phenology in the Northern Hemisphere

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract Atmospheric rivers (ARs) can rapidly alter regional hydrothermal conditions and directly affect lake ice. This study presents the first assessment of AR impacts on lake ice phenology across the Northern Hemisphere. AR events were associated with positive anomalies in temperature, rainfall, and snowfall, as well as negative anomalies in solar ...

Niche Segregation Between Black‐Necked Crane and Common Crane in Human‐Modified Landscape, Huize Black‐Necked Crane National Nature Reserve, Yunnan Province, Southwestern China

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
We investigated how Black‐necked Cranes and Common Cranes coexist in agro‐wetland landscapes of southwest China by reconstructing their plant‐based diets using eDNA metabarcoding. Black‐necked Cranes maintained broad, stable diets centered on natural vegetation, while Common Cranes shifted dynamically to energy‐dense crops, leading to progressive niche

Diverging Food Web Functioning Around Southampton Island, Nunavut: The Influence of Primary Production Supply and Bathymetry

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
Southampton Island hosts two distinct benthic sub‐webs, north and south. North is deeper, phytoplankton‐driven; South is shallower, more ice‐algae driven. North benthos: bottom‐up control, four trophic levels including apex predators. South benthos: walrus top‐down control, trophic truncation to three levels.

Effect of the North Atlantic Oscillation on the Pattern of Lake Ice Phenology in Poland [PDF]

open access: yesActa Geophysica, 2015
This paper presents an analysis of the influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation on the pattern of lake ice phenology in Poland. The research embraced 22 lakes in Poland over the period 1961–2010. Strong relations were found to hold between NAO and individual characteristics of ice phenology.

Achieving Harmonized and Integrated Long‐Term Environmental Observation of Essential Ecosystem Variables ‐ The eLTER Framework of Standard Observations

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract The development of harmonized, standardized, and integrated environmental observation systems is a key challenge in Earth system science. Such capability is essential for advancing the interdisciplinary research needed to improve understanding of the Earth system and support global sustainability.

Peatlands Have the Potential to Emerge as Significant Contributors to Future Climate Warming

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Peatlands store a substantial amount of carbon in the terrestrial ecosystem. They are both long‐term sinks of organic carbon and a major natural source of atmospheric methane. The accumulation of carbon is a result of net primary production surpassing decomposition rates over millennia, whereas methane production is intricately linked to the ...
