1971As pointed out in the previous chapters the fluorescent lamp is an electric discharge source of the low pressure mercury vapour type in which light is produced predominantly by the fluorescence of a translucent coating of fluorescent powder excited by ultra-violet radiation from the mercury vapour discharge.

Bulbs with a longer life can be manufactured at much the same cost, but at a loss in lighting efficiency, that is with a lower light-output per unit of electricity consumed.
