Integrating Sr isotopes, microchemistry, and genetics to reconstruct Salmonidae species and life history

open access: yesArchaeometry, Volume 68, Issue S2, Page S104-S129, May 2026.
Abstract Recent approaches to fisheries research emphasize the importance of the coproduction of knowledge in building resilient and culturally mindful fisheries management frameworks. Despite widespread recognition of the need for Indigenous knowledge and historical reference points as baseline data, archaeological data are rarely included in ...

Dams and Introduced Species Drive Patterns of Environmental Adaptation in an Iconic but Imperiled Coldwater Fish (Brook Trout, Salvelinus fontinalis)

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 19, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Freshwater biodiversity is being disproportionately negatively impacted by anthropogenic stressors including climate change, partly due to limited opportunities to seek more favorable conditions compared to marine and terrestrial species. Management plans that maintain locally adapted genotypes, and integrate active management interventions ...

Ethnozoological knowledge of traditional fishing villages about the anadromous sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) in the Minho river, Portugal

open access: yesJournal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine, 2019
Background Sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is a diadromous fish compromised by various stressors, which can lead to population decline and the urgency of stronger conservation regulation.

Molecular insights into electroreceptor ribbon synapses from differential gene expression in sturgeon lateral line organs

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 248, Issue 5, Page 784-805, May 2026.
The expression of various genes involved in synapse development, stability and/or function was studied in developing mechanosensory neuromasts and electrosensory ampullary organs in sterlet sturgeon. Most were shared, including Slc17a8, Slc1a3 and Nrxn3, but Cbln18 was neuromast‐restricted and Tulp1 was ampullary organ‐restricted.

A New Nonparasitic Species of the Holarctic Lamprey Genus Lethenteron Creaser and Hubbs, 1922, (Petromyzonidae) from Northwestern North America with Notes on Other Species of the Same Genus [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
A new nonparasitic lamprey, Lethenteron alaskense from Alaska and Northwest Territories is described and illustrated. The holotype (No. NMC 76-614) is deposited in the National Museum of Natural Sciences, Ottawa, Canada.

Substrate for Thyroid Hormone Synthesis: Biochemistry, Evolution, and Physiology

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 8, 30 April 2026.
Two proposed sequence of events for thyroxine formation in patients expressing mutant thyroglobulin. (A) (1) TSH stimulation drives expression of misfolded TG. (2) Unremitting ER stress. (3) Stress‐induced cell death. (4) Dead thyrocytes release their contents. (5) The contents become iodinated. (6) Forming thyroxine.

The Interrelationship of Estrogen Receptor and GnRH in a Basal Vertebrate, the Sea Lamprey

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2011
The hypothalamic-pituitary system is considered to be a vertebrate innovation and seminal event that emerged prior to or during the differentiation of the ancestral agnathans.

The first data from non-commercial monitoring of the occurrence and range of river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis, in selected rivers in northern Poland

open access: yesFisheries & Aquatic Life
Human impact on fish populations extends beyond mere exploitation. Rivers and streams, essential conduits for these fish migrations, have undergone substantial anthropogenic modifications driven by navigation, hydropower generation, and water regulation ...

Distribution of mammalian-like melanopsin in cyclostome retinas exhibiting a different extent of visual functions.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Mammals contain 1 melanopsin (Opn4) gene that is expressed in a subset of retinal ganglion cells to serve as a photopigment involved in non-image-forming vision such as photoentrainment of circadian rhythms.
