The Canadian Surveyor, 1986The United States Department of Defense (DoD) Navy Navigation Satellite System (NNSS), commonly known as Transit, has been used extensively since 1967 for civilian geodetic surveying and navigation. With the advent of the Global Positioning System (GPS), the DoD will have no further need for Transit and plans to shut down the system in 1994.
