Science of The Total Environment, 2012Graveyards have been a matter of controversial debate for many years in terms of the risk they pose to the environment. However, literature data are inconclusive and there are no systematic studies available from modern graveyards with special reference to soil found in the vicinity of the coffin.

On average, there were 633 sanitary landfills in operation in 1990-92 in Finland. Annually, 380 landfill fires occurred, one-quarter of which were deep fires. The total amount of waste burnt in landfill fires was estimated to be 84,000 tonnes year-1.

Landfill Geophysical Imaging - Babica Landfill Case Study
Proceedings, 2016One of major environmental challenges in Slovakia is to deal with numerous contaminated sites polluted by improper waste management in the past. We present a case study from Babica landfill located in western part of Slovakia near the village Bosany. The landfill was established in 1970, in a very inappropriate environment of abandoned meander.
