A fire safety engineering approach to improving community resilience to the impacts of wildfire

open access: yesFire and Materials, EarlyView.
Abstract Each year severe wildfires continue to cause significant destruction resulting in the loss of life, property, critical infrastructure, and the environment. In an effort to increase community preparedness and resilience to wildfire, international jurisdictions have adopted both guiding principles and prescriptive codes that apply to both urban ...

An Automatic Digital Terrain Generation Technique for Terrestrial Sensing and Virtual Reality Applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The identification and modeling of the terrain from point cloud data is an important component of Terrestrial Remote Sensing (TRS) applications. The main focus in terrain modeling is capturing details of complex geological features of landforms. Traditional terrain modeling approaches rely on the user to exert control over terrain features.

Exploring Basement Surface relationship of north-west Bengal Basin using satellite images and tectonic modeling [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
The Bengal basin is one of the thickest sedimentary basins and is being constantly affected by the collision of the Indian plate with the Burma and Tibetan plates. The northwest part of the basin, our study area, is one of the least explored areas where the shallowest faulted basement is present. Controversies exist about the origin of the basement and

Conservation Gap Within a Nature Reserve: A Case Study in the Biodiversity Hotspot of Rare and Endangered Plants at the Southern Gaoligong Mountains 高黎贡山南段稀有濒危植物保护空缺分析

open access: yesIntegrative Conservation, EarlyView.
Gaoligong Mountain is home to a large number of rare and endangered species, but the effectiveness of conservation measures in the Gaoligong Mountain Nature Reserve remains uncertain. We predicted the potential distribution areas of 361 rare and endangered wild plants in southern Gaoligong Mountain under current and future climate change scenarios and ...

A biogeographical approach to characterizing the climatic, physical and geomorphic niche of the most widely distributed mangrove species, Avicennia marina

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 29, Issue 1, Page 89-108, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Aim Mangroves are coastal ecosystems exposed to terrestrial, marine, geomorphic and climatic forcings operating in concert, making the mangrove niche hard to define, as evidenced by extremely poor restoration outcomes. We have developed a set of high‐resolution species distribution models and interpreted the variables that have the largest ...

Distribution and palaeoenvironmental significance of mountain blockstreams in the southern hemisphere

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Openwork mountain block deposits (blockfields, blockstreams) have received much research interest globally given their visual appeal as prominent cold‐region landforms. However, studies have shown that these landforms in both glaciated and non‐glaciated environments are probably of considerable age (pre‐Quaternary), yet the environmental ...

Geoarchaeology and geomorphology of the Metaponto area, Ionian coastal belt, Italy

open access: yesJournal of Maps, 2020
A 1:28,000-scale geoarchaeological map has been prepared for a large sector of the Ionian coastal belt of the Basilicata region, southern Italy, in order to investigate the relationships between the spatial distribution of archaeological sites of Greek ...

Modelling transverse dunes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Transverse dunes appear in regions of mainly unidirectional wind and high sand availability. A dune model is extended to two dimensional calculation of the shear stress. It is applied to simulate dynamics and morphology of transverse dunes which seem to reach translational invariance and do not stop growing.

A review of landscape rehabilitation frameworks in ecosystem engineering for mine closure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Mining causes changes to the environment and rehabilitation is necessary at mine closure. There is a lack of appropriate frameworks for mine site rehabilitation. In most cases, restoring the mine to previous conditions is challenging.

Restricted cirque glaciers in the Wicklow Mountains, Ireland, during the Nahanagan Stadial (Greenland Stadial‐1/Younger Dryas)

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In Ireland, the Nahanagan Stadial (NS) was characterised by cirque glacier, plateau icefield and mountain ice cap expansion and is named after the cirque glacier type‐site of Lough Nahanagan in the Wicklow Mountains. This period is broadly equivalent to the Younger Dryas Stadial and Greenland Stadial‐1 (GS‐1: ~12.9–11.7 ka).
