Synchronous Satellites of Venus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Synchronous satellites of Venus have long been thought unstable, but we use Poincare's surface of section technique to show that synchronous quasi-satellites orbiting just outside Venus' Hill sphere are quite stable, at least for centuries. Such synchrosats always remain within a few degrees of Venus' equator, and drift very slowly in longitude.

Factors determining nest‐site selection of surface‐nesting seabirds: a case study on the world's largest pelagic bird, the Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans)

open access: yesIbis, Volume 165, Issue 1, Page 190-203, January 2023., 2023
Several factors may drive bird nest‐site selection, including predation risk, resource availability, weather conditions and interaction with other individuals. Understanding the drivers affecting where birds nest is important for conservation planning, especially where environmental change may alter the distribution of suitable nest‐sites.

Quantifying ecosystem geomorphology of the southern Appalachian Mountains

open access: yes, 2003
Geomorphology is a dominant factor influencing vegetation distribution in the southern Appalachians, and quantifying landform characteristics is increasingly important for forest ecosystem classification. This study used slope gradient and two previously

Error Characteristics of Pan-Arctic Digital Elevation Models and Elevation Derivatives in Northern Sweden

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
Many biochemical processes and dynamics are strongly controlled by terrain topography, making digital elevation models (DEM) a fundamental dataset for a range of applications. This study investigates the quality of four pan-Arctic DEMs (Arctic DEM, ASTER

Constructing Soil–Landscape Units Based on Slope Position and Land Use to Improve Soil Prediction Accuracy

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Topography is one of the dominant factors in regional soil formation and development. Soil distribution has a certain pattern from high to low in space, and this pattern has a high degree of consistency with slope position.

Ecologically-Relevant Maps of Landforms and Physiographic Diversity for Climate Adaptation Planning. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Key to understanding the implications of climate and land use change on biodiversity and natural resources is to incorporate the physiographic platform on which changes in ecological systems unfold.

A General Approach to Domain Adaptation with Applications in Astronomy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The ability to build a model on a source task and subsequently adapt such model on a new target task is a pervasive need in many astronomical applications. The problem is generally known as transfer learning in machine learning, where domain adaptation is a popular scenario.

Gridmapping the northern plains of Mars: Geomorphological, Radar and Water-Equivalent Hydrogen results from Arcadia Plantia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
A project of mapping ice-related landforms was undertaken to understand the role of sub-surface ice in the northern plains. This work is the first continuous regional mapping from CTX (“ConTeXt Camera”, 6 m/pixel; Malin et al., 2007) imagery in Arcadia ...

Contribution for an urban geomorphoheritage assessment method. Proposal from three geomorphosites in Rome (Italy) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Urban geomorphology has important implications in spatial planning of human activities, and it also has a geotouristic potential due to the relationship between cultural and geomorphological heritage.

Large Scale Landform Mapping Using Lidar DEM

open access: yesISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information, 2015
In this study, LIDAR DEM data was used to obtain a primary landform map in accordance with a well-known methodology. This primary landform map was generalized using the Focal Statistics tool (Majority), considering the minimum area condition in ...
