Droplet Triboelectrification on Liquid‐Like Polymer Brushes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work investigates the triboelectrification of water droplets on polymer brush‐coated surfaces exhibiting minimal contact line pinning. Such surfaces enable the systematic study of electrode patterning and controlled changes in droplet contact area.

In Materia Shaping of Randomness with a Standard Complementary Metal‐Oxide‐Semiconductor Transistor for Task‐Adaptive Entropy Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study establishes a materials‐driven framework for entropy generation within standard CMOS technology. By electrically rebalancing gate‐oxide traps and Si‐channel defects in foundry‐fabricated FDSOI transistors, the work realizes in‐materia control of temporal correlation – achieving task adaptive entropy optimization for reinforcement learning ...

Enhancing spatial resolution of drought monitoring through a novel random forest-based GRACE drought index: a case study in Central Yunnan

open access: yesGeocarto International
The original coarse spatial resolution of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data limits its application in small and medium-scale areas.

Identification of the Beagle 2 lander on Mars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The 2003 Beagle 2 Mars lander has been identified in Isidis Planitia at 90.43° E, 11.53° N, close to the predicted target of 90.50° E, 11.53° N. Beagle 2 was an exobiology lander designed to look for isotopic and compositional signs of life on Mars, as ...

Photothermal Macroporous Lignin Cryogels for Off‐Grid, Continuous Atmospheric Water Collection via Interlayer Heat Recovery

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Photothermal, macroporous lignin‐based cryogels are engineered to convert sunlight into low‐grade heat. Integrated as stacked beds in a drum‐type device, a thin copper interlayer transfers waste heat between beds, enabling interlayer heat recovery and continuous solar cycling.

Spatial and Temporal Interplay Between Oceanic Circulation and Biological Production in Shaping Carbon Export Off the California Coast

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
A major challenge in understanding the oceanic carbon cycle is estimating the sinking flux of organic carbon exiting the sunlit surface ocean, termed carbon export.

From Mechanics to Electronics: Influence of ALD Interlayers on the Multiaxial Electro‐Mechanical Behavior of Metal–Oxide Bilayers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ultrathin AlOxHy interlayers between aluminum films and polymer substrates significantly improve electro‐mechanical properties of flexible thin film systems. By precisely controlling interlayer thickness using atomic layer deposition, this study identifies an optimal interlayer thickness of 5–10 nm that enhances ductility and delays cracking.

Co-registered Geochemistry and Metatranscriptomics Reveal Unexpected Distributions of Microbial Activity within a Hydrothermal Vent Field

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2017
Despite years of research into microbial activity at diffuse flow hydrothermal vents, the extent of microbial niche diversity in these settings is not known. To better understand the relationship between microbial activity and the associated physical and

Start, Stop, Rewind, Repeat—Cyclic Exposure of Adipose Stromal Cells‐derived Cartilage Organoids to Chondrogenic and Proliferative Cues to Achieve Scaled‐up and Customizable Bone Formation by Endochondral Ossification

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study exploits the plasticity of ASCs‐derived cartilage organoids which generate a perichondrial layer of MSCs when exposed to cyclic chondrogenic/proliferative cues. Using these organoids as building blocks, we develop (i) Phalange Shaped Tissue Engineered Cartilage (Pa‐TECs), recapitulating endochondral ossification suitable for the treatment of

Critical soft landing technology issues for future US space missions [PDF]

open access: yes
A programmatic need for research and development to support parachute-based landing systems has not existed since the end of the Apollo missions in the mid-1970s. Now, a number of planned space programs require advanced landing capabilities for which the
