Environmental effects on otolith morphology variability of European eel, Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758), for subpopulation discrimination in Corsica

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Otolith shape analysis is an efficient tool for fish stock identification. However, due to insufficient research, it remains still poorly understood concerning the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), a highly migratory catadromous and panmictic species ...

Clean Up Behind You ‐ Novel Patterning Approach for Solid Immersion Lenses

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A focused ion beam (FIB) milling strategy enables rapid fabrication of solid immersion lenses (SILs) with smooth, debris‐free surfaces eliminating the need for post‐processing. The optimized pattern improves efficiency and surface quality. SILs containing NV centers are also investigated, confirming the technique's suitability for quantum and photonic ...

Establishing a Model Precursor System: Over a Decade of Research on Carbon Dots from the Citric Acid‐Urea System

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The citric acid/urea (CA‐Urea) precursor system offers a versatile, scalable route to carbon dots with tunable luminescence and multifunctionality. Mechanistic insights into precursor chemistry and reaction parameters have enabled doping, surface modification, and hybridization strategies, yielding CDs for luminescent devices, sensing, catalysis ...

The Floor‐Ceiling‐Chip, or 2 × 2D = Pseudo‐3D—Approaching 3D Cell Morphology and Organization between Two Opposing 2D Substrates with Cell‐Adhesive Protein Micropatterns

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Here, we present a novel 3D cell patterning and culture platform. The “Floor‐Ceiling‐Chip” (FC‐Chip) consists of two opposing track‐etched membranes, creating a pseudo‐3D microenvironment for the cells in between. By providing the membranes with micropatterned cell‐adhesive islands of varying geometries and sizes, the FC‐Chip enables control over cell ...

First Virtual Reconstruction of a Mosasaurid Brain Endocast: Description and Comparison of the Endocast of Tethysaurus nopcsai with Those of Extant Squamates

open access: yesDiversity
Paleoneurological studies of mosasaurids are few and limited to old partial reconstructions made from latex casts on Platecarpus and Clidastes. Here, the brain endocasts of three specimens of the early mosasaurid Tethysaurus nopcsai from the Turonian of ...

Bone Healing Around Implants in Normal and Medically Compromised Conditions: Osteoporosis and Diabetes

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
xx xx. ABSTRACT Osseointegration of orthopedic and dental implants is influenced by local and systemic factors, including their physicochemical surface properties and the patient's overall health status. Titanium and its alloys have been a longstanding standard for bone implants due to their innate biocompatibility and mechanical properties.

Selection of landmarks and semilandmarks in fishes for geometric morphometric analyses: a comparative study based on analytical methods

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2016
We applied and compared three different sets of landmarks and semilandmarks commonly used in studies of fish assemblages to identify a standardized method of landmark selection that includes the maximum amount of morphological information of species. The

Thermal Processing Creates Water‐Stable PEDOT:PSS Films for Bioelectronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 37, Issue 13, April 2, 2025.
Instead of using chemical cross–linkers, it is shown that PEDOT:PSS thin films for bioelectronics become water‐stable after a simple heat treatment. The heat treatment is compatible with a range of rigid and elastomeric substrates and films are stable in vivo for >20 days.

Effects of High Larval Density on Wing Shape Deformations of Culex pipiens (Culicidae: Diptera) via Geometric Morphometrics

open access: yesInsects
Populations of Culex pipiens, which is considered a primary vector of West Nile Virus, are not uniformly shaped, and hence, they are difficult to work on, not only because of the complex structure of the species but also due to the possible deformations ...

Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy in Bionanotechnology: Current Advances and Future Perspectives

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) enables the nanoscale mapping of electrostatic surface potentials. While widely applied in materials science, its use in biological systems remains emerging. This review presents recent advances in KPFM applied to biological samples and provides a critical perspective on current limitations and future directions for
