An evaluation of a SIRA image to determine forest density under conditions of moderate topographical variation [PDF]

open access: yes
Many studies have shown that radar images have increased classification accuracy over spectral classifications using only LANDSAT Multispectral Band Scanner (MSS) images.

Subglacial landscape formation and sediment discharge: relating basal conditions to bedform dimensions and properties at Rutford Ice Stream, West Antarctica

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Basal conditions that facilitate fast ice flow are still poorly understood and their parameterization in ice‐flow models results in high uncertainties in ice‐flow and consequent sea‐level rise projections. Direct observations of basal conditions beneath modern ice streams are limited due to the inaccessibility of the bed.

CCRS proposal for evaluating LANDSAT-D MSS and TM data [PDF]

open access: yes
Accomplishments in the evaluation of LANDSAT 4 data are reported. The objectives of the Canadian proposal are: (1) to quantify the LANDSAT-4 sensors and system performance for the purpose of updating the radiometric and geometric correction algorithms ...

Automated delineation and morphometry of unclassified subglacial bedforms

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
We present an automated tool for mapping and analysing subglacial bedforms using volumetric obscurance, without classification. Tested on ArcticDEM data, the method produces bedform outlines with 75% correspondence compared to manually digitized maps.

Cost effectiveness of conventional versus LANDSAT use data for hydrologic modeling [PDF]

open access: yes
Six case studies were analyzed to investigate the cost effectiveness of using land use data obtained from LANDSAT as opposed to conventionally obtained data.

Climate‐related drivers of migratory bird health in the south‐central USA

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 3, Page 1272-1293, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Migratory birds are species of concern that play important ecological roles while also supporting recreational opportunities for the hunting and birdwatching public. Direct and indirect effects of climate variability, extremes, and change on migratory bird health manifest at the individual, population, species, and community levels.

Digital color analysis of color-ratio composite LANDSAT scenes [PDF]

open access: yes
A method is presented that can be used to calculate approximate Munsell coordinates of the colors produced by making a color composite from three registered images.

Effect of uneven tolerance to human disturbance on dominance interactions of top predators

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract Anthropogenic activities may alter felid assemblage structure, facilitating the persistence of tolerant species (commonly mesopredators), excluding ecologically demanding ones (top predators) and, consequently, changing coexistence rules. We aimed to determine how human activities influence intraguild relationships among top predators and ...

Earth Observations in Social Science Research for Management of Natural Resources and the Environment: Identifying the Contribution of the U.S. Land Remote Sensing (Landsat) Program [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper surveys and describes the peer-reviewed social science literature in which data from the U.S. land remote sensing program, Landsat, inform public policy in managing natural resources and the environment.

Assessing disturbances in surviving primary forests of Europe

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract Primary forests are of paramount importance for biodiversity conservation and the provision of ecosystem services. In Europe, these forests are scarce and threatened by human activities. However, a comprehensive assessment of the magnitude of disturbances in these forests is lacking, due in part to their incomplete mapping.
