Emerging Hotspots of Cropland Expansion on Steeper Tropical Terrains Intensify Tropical Forest Carbon Loss

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract Tropical deforestation driven by agricultural expansion to meet growing food demand poses a rising threat to the global carbon cycle. While previous studies quantified agriculture‐related carbon losses, the role of cropland expansion remains poorly resolved, partly because widely used agricultural driver data sets are too coarse to detect fine‐

Topography constrains the climatic response of treeline migration in Taiwan's subalpine forests

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 9, September 2026.
Treelines are moving upslope, but the rates and drivers differ among different regions, globally. Many studies have examined the relationship between treeline movement and climate change, particularly rising temperature, while the role of topographical factors has received much less attention, despite the longstanding recognition of its importance.

An empirical model for prediction of wheat yield, using time-integrated Landsat NDVI

open access: yes, 2018
Information on long-term yield variability is important for tailoring farming practices to the needs of crops. We present a linear mixed-effects model to predict wheat yield at a within-field scale in the northern grain-growing region of Australia.

Integrating multi‐decadal satellite imagery and species distribution models for conservation planning in oak woodlands

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Oak woodlands are among California's least protected yet most ecologically important ecosystems, providing critical habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal species. These foundational plant communities are increasingly threatened by drought, wildfire, and other climate‐driven disturbances, which have contributed to significant declines ...

Forty years of vegetation dynamics in the subarctic‐alpine landscape of the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland using Landsat image analysis

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence
The Cairngorms is a mountain range in northeastern Scotland, with a subarctic‐alpine environment and tundra‐like vegetation communities of low‐biomass heath, acid grassland and boulder fields.

Resilience or reassembly: Wildfire–vegetation dynamics in rapidly warming subarctic forests of northwestern Canada

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Climate‐induced shifts in disturbance regimes are reshaping northern forest ecosystems, where tree species are at their geographic range limit. Northern Canada has warmed over twice as much as the mean global increase since 1950, providing a critical context to study climate–fire–vegetation interactions under rapid warming.

Long‐term trends in greenness in the alpine zone of northeastern North America from remote sensing

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Alpine zones above treeline in the Appalachian Mountains and adjacent ranges of northeastern North America support distinctive ecological communities that thrive where conditions are too harsh for trees to grow. These communities differ from alpine zones elsewhere on the continent and are a regionally important source of floristic biodiversity,

Climate and landscape context drive the functional composition of young tropical forests

open access: yesEcology, Volume 107, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Human‐modified tropical landscapes are mosaics of farmland, young regrowing forests, and old‐growth forests. These fragmented landscapes are hotter and drier than forested landscapes and, combined with climate change, may lead to shifts in forest community composition.
