Tapping the tree-ring archive for studying effects of resin extraction on the growth and climate sensitivity of Scots pine

open access: yesForest Ecosystems, 2017
Background In the German Democratic Republic (GDR), resin tapping in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) forests was a major economic activity, and resin-tapped stands are frequently found up until this day.

The importance of individual movement and feeding behaviour for long-distance seed dispersal by red deer: a data-driven model

open access: yesMovement Ecology, 2020
Background Long-distance seed dispersal (LDD) has strong impacts on the spatiotemporal dynamics of plants. Large animals are important LDD vectors because they regularly transport seeds of many plant species over long distances.

As good as human experts in detecting plant roots in minirhizotron images but efficient and reproducible: the convolutional neural network “RootDetector”

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Plant roots influence many ecological and biogeochemical processes, such as carbon, water and nutrient cycling. Because of difficult accessibility, knowledge on plant root growth dynamics in field conditions, however, is fragmentary at best ...

Sustainable Electrochemical Synthesis of High‐Quality MXenes: Mechanistic Insights, Applications, Challenges, and Technological Prospects

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electrochemical etching provides an eco‐friendly alternative to hazardous HF methods for MXene production. This approach facilitates the selective isolation of the A‐layer from MAX phases with tunable surface terminations. Controlling voltage, electrolytes, temperature, and duration enables the optimal structural integrity. Nevertheless, existing scale

An insight into the pivotal roles of ubiquitination in mediating plant responses to heat stress through diverse pathways and modules

open access: yesChemical and Biological Technologies in Agriculture
Rising ambient temperatures associated with global climate change present a major threat to plant productivity by imposing heat stress (HS) that disrupts cellular, biochemical, and molecular processes in plants. HS leads to protein unfolding, aggregation,

Leaftronics: Bio‐Fractal Scaffolds From Leaf Venation for Low‐Waste Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
“Leaftronics” transforms naturally evolved leaf venation into quasi‐fractal scaffolds for sustainable electronics. Polymer‐infiltrated leaf skeletons can be used to fabricate ultra‐smooth, reflow‐ and thin‐film‐compatible decomposable substrates, while making the same lignocellulose networks conducting results in flexible transparent electrodes.

Natura 2000 sites as a crucial part of nature conservation? An analysis of landscape development in selected areas of the Czech Republic

open access: yesMoravian Geographical Reports
The Natura 2000 network is the key tool for preserving biodiversity in the EU. However, such a system of territorial protection is under increasing anthropogenic pressure and sites with no national designation are managed rather insufficiently across ...
