Sustainable Productivity Growth in Agriculture: The Role of Shifts in R&D Investments and Technology

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The objective of the paper is to evaluate the long‐term prospects of sustainable productivity growth linked to plausible assumptions on public agricultural R&D investments as the key productivity driver. Second, it investigates the role of changing R&D focus from yield maximization to input saving technologies (fertilizers and pesticides). The

Spatiotemporal drivers of crop pests and pathogens abundance at the landscape scale

open access: yes, 2019
Abstract The agricultural landscape has been recognized as a relevant scale for the control of bioagressors (pest and pathogen) epidemics. In this study, we assess the consistency of the impacts of semi-natural areas and host crop fields in the landscape on bioagressor abundance in cultivated fields.

Landscape complexity and elevation affect the effectiveness of a local pest-management practice

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2019
Farm-scale diversification practices have been proposed as a means to enhance crop protection, primarily by increasing the presence of beneficial arthropods. The effectiveness of diversification is often context-dependent.

Drivers of Precision Agriculture Adoption in Italian Viticulture

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study examines the main drivers influencing the adoption of two types of precision farming technologies in the viticultural sector: Decision Support Systems (DSSs) and Variable Rate Technologies (VRTs). We apply a partial proportional odds model and find that socio‐demographic characteristics are not significant determinants of adoption ...

Hemp Cultivation and Crop Diversification: Implications for Ecosystem Services in Kentucky

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study examines the ecosystem benefits of expanding hemp cultivation by assessing its impact on crop diversity. Using scenario‐based simulations and fixed‐effect panel regressions with county‐level data in Kentucky, we find that increased hemp acreage tends to enhance crop diversity, improving water quality and bird diversity.

Scaling Contagious Disturbance: A Spatially-Implicit Dynamic Model

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2019
Spatial processes often drive ecosystem processes, biogeochemical cycles, and land-atmosphere feedbacks at the landscape-scale. Climate-sensitive disturbances, such as fire, land-use change, pests, and pathogens, often spread contagiously across the ...

Agricultural Diversification at the Margin. Strategies and Determinants in Italian Mountain and Remote Areas

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper explores the convergence in on‐farm diversification strategies of agricultural holdings, between remote areas and more central ones. Using Italian farm‐level data, we explore the determinants of diversification strategies across farms.

Developing a predictive model for an emerging epidemic on cassava in sub-Saharan Africa

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
The agricultural productivity of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is severely constrained by pests and pathogens, impacting economic stability and food security.

Traceability of Agri‐Food Products: The Key to Conscious Trade

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Globalization and growing concerns about sustainability have led to improvements in product traceability, quality, and sustainability. Traceability contributes to environmental protection and supports sustainable development by fostering transparency in agricultural practices and encouraging the responsible use of resources.

Landscape diversity and local temperature, but not climate, affect arthropod predation among habitat types.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
Arthropod predators are important for ecosystem functioning by providing top-down regulation of insect herbivores. As predator communities and activity are influenced by biotic and abiotic factors on different spatial scales, the strength of top-down ...
