ABSTRACT This article investigates the characterization of cascading phenomena within sociotechnical systems through a systematic review and the development of a conceptual modelling framework. Cascading phenomena, often described using terms such as ripple effect, domino effect, cascading failure, risk propagation and cascading effect, capture the far‐

Environmental Impact of Silicic Magmatism in Large Igneous Province Events
Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact
An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions.

Large‐scale tests of 50‐year‐old prestressed concrete bridge girders
Abstract An experimental investigation has been carried out as part of the BRIDGE|50 research project, focusing on large‐scale loading tests performed on five 50‐year‐old prestressed concrete (PC) girders. The study aimed at evaluating the structural response of five girders retrieved from a viaduct in the urban area of Turin, Italy, subjected to 4 ...

Ensemble learning landslide susceptibility assessment with optimized non-landslide samples selection
Non-landslide samples influence the outcomes of landslide susceptibility assessment. Existing studies did not fully consider the equilibrium between landslide and non-landslide samples in similar environments, resulting in poor reliability of landslide ...

Cyclone Ditwah (2025) made landfall in Sri Lanka as a tropical cyclone with only moderate intensity winds (~65–75kmh−1). Yet, its prolonged heavy rainfall also led to landslides and widespread flooding across Sri Lanka and the southern Indian states, with the combined effects of hazards causing impacts totalling 4.1 billion USD. Ditwah is, therefore, a

Evolution of Pajonales Landslide (Tirajana Depression, Gran Canaria): A Case of Advancing Landslide
We studied the evolution of different stages of Pajonales landslide (Tirajana Depression, Gran Canaria), based on the geotechnical investigations of both in situ and mobilized volcanic materials.

Trends in thunderstorm days, lightning activity, squalls and the environmental factors in Hong Kong
This study analyses trends in Hong Kong's convective weather using long‐term observer‐based and shorter‐term instrument‐based data. Annual thunderstorm days increased significantly by 1.9 days decade−1 in 1947–2024, notably in June–September, consistent with increasingly favourable warm‐season environments for thunderstorms.

Enhancing Generalisation via Cascaded Inertia SGD With Learnt Hyperparameters
ABSTRACT A central challenge in deep learning lies in achieving strong model generalisation, an area in which conventional optimisers such as stochastic gradient descent (SGD) often exhibit limitations, even though they ensure convergence. This paper introduces cascaded inertia SGD (CISGD), a novel optimisation algorithm specifically designed to ...
