Starting with an account of the author’s experience of corpus applications in language teaching from the mid 1970s through to 2014, this chapter traces the transformation of corpus analysis from its origins on mainframe computers in university departments to the present day – where personal computers are used in research, materials development and DDL.

Utilization of Language Corpora
2018Even after nearly 70 years, the staunch supporters of the generative genre still like to argue that linguistics is a branch of intuition and introspection where corpora, as a showcase of empirical language data, is most unrevealing and unwanted. It is true that corpus-based language study cannot encompass the generative aspects of language or of ...

ReCALL, 2005
With computer corpora firmly established as research tools in linguistics, their application for language teaching purposes is also increasingly advocated to the extent that corpus-based language teaching has even been praised as the new revolution in language teaching (cf. Sinclair, 2004b).

Limitations of Language Corpora
2018Language corpora, from the very first date of their inception, have been a target of constant criticism by scholars from different domains of linguistics. In reality, there are people from many domains who join with generative linguists to nullify the importance of corpora in research, investigation and application.

Repetition and language models and comparable corpora
Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Building and Using Comparable Corpora from Parallel to Non-parallel Corpora - BUCC '09, 2009I will discuss a couple of non-standard features that I believe could be useful for working with comparable corpora. Dotplots have been used in biology to find interesting DNA sequences. Biology is interested in ordered matches, which show up as (possibly broken) diagonals in dot-plots. Information Retrieval is more interested in unordered matches (e.g.

1996
Abstract Although the number of corpus-linguistic publications has increased dramatically in the last few years (e.g. Svartvik, 1992), the special problems and the potential of second-language corpora have not been given adequate systematic treatment.

Language-model optimization by mapping of corpora
Proceedings of the 1998 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing, ICASSP '98 (Cat. No.98CH36181), 2002It is questionable whether words are really the best basic units for the estimation of stochastic language models-grouping frequent word sequences to phrases can improve language models. More generally, we have investigated various coding schemes for a corpus. In this paper, it is applied to optimize the perplexity of n-gram language models.

The articles in this edited volume represent a broad coverage of areas. They discuss the role and effectiveness of corpora and corpus-linguistic techniques for language teaching but also deal with broader issues such as the relationship between corpora and second language teaching and how the different perspectives of foreign language teachers and ...
