1994Abstract Rabbi Yonatan of Bet Guvrin (Elentheropolis) describes the linguistic-cultural reality of Palestine during the second century AD as follows: ‘There are four languages which are worthy of common use-Greek for poetry, Latin for battle, Syriac (Aramaic) for lamentation, and Hebrew for speech’ (quoted by Greenfield 1978: 154).
