Acoustic and Large Eddy Simulation studies of azimuthal modes in annular combustion chambers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The objectives of this paper are the description of azimuthal instability modes found in annular combus- tion chambers using two numerical tools: (1) Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methods and (2) acoustic solv- ers.

Microscale Mapping of Fiber Strain and Damage in Composite Wrinkled Laminates Using Computed Tomography Assisted Wide‐Angle X‐Ray Scattering

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study combines full‐field tomography with diffraction mapping to quantify radial (ε002$\varepsilon _{002}$) and axial (ε100$\varepsilon _{100}$) lattice strain in wrinkled carbon‐fiber specimens for the first time. Radial microstrain gradients (−14.5 µεMPa$\varepsilon \mathrm{MPa}$−1) are found to signal damage‐prone zones ahead of failure, which ...

TIME-CONSERVATIVE FINITE-VOLUME METHOD WITH LARGE-EDDY SIMULATION FOR COMPUTATIONAL AEROACOUSTICS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This thesis presents a time-conservative finite-volume method based on a modern flow simulation technique developed by the author. Its applicability to technically relevant aeroacoustic applications is demonstrated.

Large eddy simulation of transonic turbulent flow over a bump

open access: yes, 1998
Transonic turbulent boundary-layer flow over a circular-arc bump has been computed by high-resolution large-eddy simulation of the compressible Navier–Stokes equations.

Lymphoid‐Tissue‐on‐Chip Recapitulates Human Antibody Responses In Vitro

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The presented lymphoid‐tissue‐on‐chip system allows culture of primary human tonsil cells at organotypic high density under perfusion for up to 4 weeks, emulates immune response to soluble vaccines and vaccination via peripheral antigen‐presenting cells and represents a useful tool to assess cellular interactions during homeostasis, immune responses ...

Endoplasmic Reticulum Geometry Dictates Neuronal Bursting via Calcium Store Refill Rates and Exposes Selective Neuronal Vulnerability

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The ER's continuous tubular network is maintained by ER‐shaping proteins whose mutation or dysregulation contributes to neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we show that ER morphology sets the speed of Ca2+ store replenishment between firing events. Disrupting ER continuity slows intra‐ER Ca2+ redistribution from extracellular refill (SOCE) sites, driving

Efficient generation of inflow conditions for large-eddy simulation of street-scale flows

open access: yes, 2008
Using a numerical weather forecasting code to provide the dynamic largescale inlet boundary conditions for the computation of small-scale urban canopy flows requires a continuous specification of appropriate inlet turbulence.

Nanocurvature‐Activated Dipolar Polarization in M–N4 Single‐Atom Sites for High‐Performance Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Increasing nanocurvature effectively enriches the local electron density of the M–N4 motif, which facilitates electron transfer from the metal center to nitrogen atoms. This electronic behavior intensifies the localization and asymmetric distribution of charge, thereby significantly amplifying the dipole moment and polarizability.

Large eddy simulations in 2030 and beyond [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2014
Since its introduction, in the early 1970s, large eddy simulations (LES) have advanced considerably, and their application is transitioning from the academic environment to industry. Several landmark developments can be identified over the past 40 years, such as the wall-resolved simulations of wall-bounded flows, the development of advanced models for
