The expansion of the golden jackal Canis aureus in Europe, caused mainly by habitat fragmentation, climate change and the decline of large carnivores until half a century ago, poses emerging challenges for newly colonised regions. With the arrival of a new species, potential effects on local animal communities, hunting, livestock husbandry or the ...

Understanding how wild ungulates share space with domestic livestock is central to conservation planning in Himalayan multi‐use landscapes. This study focuses on multi‐axis niche relationships among six wild ungulates: hangul Cervus hanglu hanglu, Kashmir musk deer Moschus cupreus, Himalayan goral Naemorhedus goral, kashmir markhor Capra falconeri ...

First insights into the movement patterns of maned wolf with sarcoptic mange
Understanding how infectious diseases influence wildlife behavior, particularly in habitats undergoing modification, is crucial for predicting disease outbreaks, assessing impacts on population fitness, and mitigating human health risks. Sarcoptic mange can alter wildlife movement and space use, yet its effects on threatened carnivores remain unclear ...

In the winter of 2021/2022, a winter track survey revealed 43–46 tigers (without cubs) in 5.4 thousand km2 of suitable habitats in the Southwest Primorsky Province of Russia. In the same period, a network of camera traps registered 54 adult/subadult tigers here.

Climate change drives shifts in suitable habitats for Eurasian lynx and its prey (hare, roe deer) in Mohe, Daxing'anling Mountains. Under RCP scenarios, moderate warming (RCP4.5) promotes substantial habitat expansion, while high‐emission conditions (RCP8.5) lead to strong expansion in the 2050s but slower gains and partial contraction by the 2070s ...

We used spatially explicit capture‐recapture to estimate jaguar densities in a private reserve in the Colombian Llanos and quantified land cover change in and around the reserve from 2014 to 2024. Densities increased 22% since 2014, while disturbed land cover increased by 39%–54% around the reserve depending on buffer distance. Our study indicates that

We used automated behavioral response systems (ABRs) to assess invasive wild pig (Sus scrofa) behavioral response to four auditory playbacks: humans, coyote vocalizations (Canis latrans), pigs in distress, and barred owl (Strix varia) calls. Wild pigs had a significant flight response to human playbacks, but 68% of pigs did not flee.

By comparing widespread surveys with randomly placed cameras to a protocol pairing detection dogs with cameras, we found that the detection‐dog‐guided camera survey had approximately 33 times greater detections with fewer camera nights and reduced survey costs. We recommend using detection dogs to identify areas to focus camera trapping. ABSTRACT Multi‐

Facing Truths About Population Management
Populations of wildlife, and domestic animals have large sinks for surplus animals. By contrast, zoos don't. Humans in industrialized societies are socialized with companion animals, i.e. surplus (i.e., typically denied reproduction) originating from unseen breeding cores.
