Small Deformations Superposed on Large Deformations in Materials with Fading Memory

Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 1961
The non-linear stress-deformation relation for materials with memory has been discussed by Green & Rivlin [1] and Green,Rivlin & Spencer [2]. In the present paper we derive the restricted form applicable to small dynamic deformations superposed on large static deformations.

Leukocyte deformability: Finite element modeling of large viscoelastic deformation

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1992
An axisymmetric deformation of a viscoelastic sphere bounded by a prestressed elastic thin shell in response to external pressure is studied by a finite element method. The research is motivated by the need for understanding the passive behavior of human leukocytes (white blood cells) and interpreting extensive experimental data in terms of the ...

Large Deformations of Polymers

2014
The stress-strain behavior of polymers is described. The rheological equations of state for isotropic elastic materials are discussed as well as the equation of state for the ideal rubber. The theory of rubber elasticity is shortly presented.

Stable deformations in large metallic clusters

Physical Review Letters, 1993
Only a relatively small number of metallic clusters exhibit a stable spherical shape. We show that the majority of such clusters tend to acquire a deformed shape, in order to minimise the fluctuating part of the total energy, due to the bunching of the single particle electronic levels in a confined geometry.

Incompressibility and Large Deformations

2017
We present a new point of view on the motion of an incompressible solid with large deformations. The description of the shape changes of the solid involves the stretch matrix \(\mathbf {W}\) of the classical polar decomposition. The incompressibility condition is \(\det \mathbf {W}\,\ge \,1\), accounting for possible cavitation or phase change.

Reconstructive elasticity imaging for large deformations

IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control, 1999
A method is presented to reconstruct the elastic modulus of soft tissue based on ultrasonic displacement and strain images for comparatively large deformations. If the average deformation is too large to be described with a linear elastic model, nonlinear displacement-strain relations must be used and the mechanical equilibrium equations must include ...

Foundations of Large Deformations

1984
In these lecture notes we will recapitulate some basic facts from the mechanics of a continuous medium at finite deformations, which are needed for the development of thermomechanical constitutive theory, presented in separate articles of this course on thermoplasticity.
