Chemical Evolution of the Universe and its Consequences for Gravitational‐Wave Astrophysics

open access: yesAnnalen der Physik, Volume 536, Issue 2, February 2024.
Population properties of double compact object mergers (especially binary black holes) are sensitive to the metallicity dependent cosmic star formation history. The uncertainty of this quantity cannot be ignored and makes the interpretation of current gravitational wave observations difficult.

Resolving stellar populations with integral field spectroscopy

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 340, Issue 9-10, Page 989-995, November‐December 2019., 2019
Abstract High‐performance instruments at large ground‐based telescopes have made integral field spectroscopy (IFS) a powerful tool for the study of extended objects such as galaxies, nebulae, or even larger survey fields on the sky. Here, we discuss the capabilities of IFS for the study of resolved stellar populations, using the new method of point ...

The warp of the Galaxy and the Large Magellanic Cloud [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2002
We study the possibility that the Galactic warp is caused by the tides of the Magellanic clouds. Using a specialized N-body particle+ring code we investigate the role of extra torques on the disc induced by gravitational wakes in the dark halo created by the Large Magellanic Cloud. We find that neither the amplitude nor the orientation of the resulting

RAM PRESSURE STRIPPING OF THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD’S DISK AS A PROBE OF THE MILKY WAY’S CIRCUMGALACTIC MEDIUM [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Recent observations have constrained the orbit and structure of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), implying a well-constrained pericentric passage about the Milky Way (MW) ∼50 Myr ago.

Molecular Clouds Associated with the Type Ia SNR N103B in the Large Magellanic Cloud [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2018
N103B is a Type Ia supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We carried out new 12CO(J = 3–2) and 12CO(J = 1–0) observations using ASTE and ALMA.

Chemically peculiar stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2006
The detection of magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars in open clusters of extragalactic systems can give observational answers to many unsolved questions. The mean percentage of CP2 stars in the Milky Way is of the order of 5% for the spectral range from early B- to F-type, luminosity class V objects.

THE PANCHROMATIC VIEW OF THE MAGELLANIC CLOUDS FROM CLASSICAL CEPHEIDS. I. DISTANCE, REDDENING, AND GEOMETRY OF THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD DISK [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We present a detailed investigation of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) disk using classical Cepheids. Our analysis is based on optical (I, V; OGLE-IV), near-infrared (NIR: J, H, ) and mid-infrared (MIR: w1; WISE) mean magnitudes.

Rotation of the Milky Way and the formation of the Magellanic Stream [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We studied the impact of the revisited values for the LSR circular velocity of the Milky Way (Reid et al. 2004) on the formation of the Magellanic Stream. The LSR circular velocity was varied within its observational uncertainties as a free parameter of the interaction between the Large (LMC) and the Small (SMC) Magellanic Clouds and the Galaxy.

Astrophysical Distance Scale. VII. A Self-consistent, Multiwavelength Calibration of the Slopes and Relative Zero Points for the Run of Luminosity with the Color of Stars Defining the Tip of the Red Giant Branch

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2023
Given the recent successful launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, determining robust calibrations of the slopes and absolute magnitudes of the near- to mid-infrared tip of the red-giant branch (TRGB) will be essential to measuring precise ...
