High Performance Lyot and PIAA Coronagraphy for Arbitrarily shaped Telescope Apertures

open access: yes, 2013
Two high performance coronagraphic approaches compatible with segmented and obstructed telescope pupils are described. Both concepts use entrance pupil amplitude apodization and a combined phase and amplitude focal plane mask to achieve full ...

Radiation Hardened Infrared Photodetectors Based on a Narrow Bandgap Conjugated Polymer Semiconductor

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
A blackbody‐sensitive infrared photodetector comprised of an open‐shell conjugated polymer demonstrates high sensitivity without cooling and exceptional radiation hardness, surpassing inorganic compound semiconductor devices. This functionality, inherent to the polymer semiconductor, provides a new frontier for low‐cost, size, weight, and power space ...

A Reverse-Design Strategy for the Track Error of the Qi Tai Telescope Based on Pointing Accuracy

open access: yesEngineering, 2022
The Qi Tai Telescope (QTT), which has a 110 m aperture, is planned to be the largest scale steerable telescope in the world. Ideally, the telescope’s repeated pointing accuracy error should be less than 2.5 arc seconds (arcsec); thus, the telescope ...

The Baikal Neutrino Telescope: Status and plans [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2007
The high energy neutrino telescope NT200+ is currently in operation in Lake Baikal. We review the status of the Baikal the Baikal Neutrino Telescope, and describe recent progress on key components of the next generation kilometer-cube (km3) Lake Baikal detector, like investigation of new large area phototubes, integrated into the telescope.

The Optical System for the Large Size Telescope of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

open access: yes, 2015
The Large Size Telescope (LST) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is designed to achieve a threshold energy of 20 GeV. The LST optics is composed of one parabolic primary mirror 23 m in diameter and 28 m focal length.

Determining Exciton Diffusion Length in Organic Semiconductors: Unifying Macro‐ and Microscopic Perspectives

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
Exciton diffusion length in organic semiconductor films is determined from encounter/annihilation rates. Non‐normalized exciton densities and proper intrinsic lifetime reference avoid over‐parametrization of the fits. Monte Carlo Simulation of individual molecule‐to‐molecule hops reproduce these results (②) when matching lattice constant and hoping ...

Wide Aperture Exoplanet Telescope: a low-cost flat configuration for a 100+ meter ground based telescope [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
The Wide Aperture Exoplanet Telescope (WAET) is a ground-based optical telescope layout in which one dimension of a filled aperture can be made very, very large (beyond 100 m) at low cost and complexity. With an unusual beam path but an otherwise-conventional optics, we obtain a fully-steerable telescope on a low-rise mount with a fixed gravity vector ...

A Physics‐Informed Neural Network as a Digital Twin of Optically Turbid Media

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
In this work, a physics‐informed neural network is presented as a digital twin for modeling and studying optically turbid media without requiring reference light. The model learns and integrates complex wavefront modulation behavior, ensuring robustness without explicit calibration.

Imaging extrasolar planets with the European Extremely Large Telescope

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2011
The European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) is the most ambitious of the ELTs being planned. With a diameter of 42 m and being fully adaptive from the start, the E-ELT will be more than one hundred times more sensitive than the present-day largest ...
