Whole‐Mount Acetylcholinesterase Staining Reveals Unique Motor Innervation of the Lamprey Oral Region: With Special Reference to the Evolutionary Origin of the Vertebrate Jaw

Whole‐mount acetylcholinesterase staining in lamprey embryos reveals that the subpharyngeal subbranch (rV2/3Asubp) of the trigeminal nerve contains motor components and innervates the lower lip. Based on the results, we suggest that a drastic reorganization of the anterior craniofacial region occurred during the vertebrate jaw evolution.

Recently Evolved, Stage‐Specific Genes Are Enriched at Life‐Stage Transitions in Flies

We discovered that 20%–30% of protein‐coding genes in Drosophila melanogaster and Aedes aegypti are only expressed during specific stages of development. Surprisingly, many of these stage‐specific genes are newly evolved, unique to flies and mosquitoes, shedding light on how insect development has evolved over time.
