Increased energetic cost of movement reduces reproductive output in zebrafish at different temperatures and water flow rates

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Locomotion consumes a large proportion of individual energy budgets and may impose energetic constraints on other fitness‐related traits particularly under variable environmental conditions.

Functional variation in butterfly egg pore traits: The potential role of climate

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Immobile eggs of terrestrial animals are exposed to variable environmental conditions. Insect egg pores, critical for gas exchange (aeropyles) and fertilisation (micropyles), are ecologically important yet understudied.

The ‘big houses‐big cars dilemma’: How do we reconcile the prevalence of positive correlations among life history traits?

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Life history theory assumes that there are negative correlations among different components of the life history—investing more in reproduction now means taking resources away from growth, maintenance or the ability to reproduce in the future.

No effect of short‐term exposure to ocean acidification on individual‐level variation in behaviour and susceptibility to predation in a Great Barrier Reef damselfish

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study shows that projected ocean acidification does not alter behaviour or predation risk in coral reef fish, challenging earlier assumptions. By quantifying consistent individual‐level behavioural differences and relating individual traits to survival during a live‐predation trial, it also provides evidence for a boldness–predation trade‐off in a
