Impact of CD40 (rs1883832) and CD40L (rs1126535) gene variants on laryngeal cancer susceptibility and their association with serum biomarker levels of sCD40 and sCD40L.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
IntroductionThe most prevalent head and neck cancer type is laryngeal cancer. Laryngeal cancer susceptibility is increased by a combination of genetic variables and environmental factors.

Prognostic Value of Impaired Vocal Cord Mobility in T2N0 Glottic Cancer Treated With IMRT

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
T2N0M0 glottic cancers with impaired vocal cord mobility (VCM) have worse outcomes than T2N0M0 tumors with normal VCM, but still fare better than T3N0M0 disease. These findings support subdivision of T2 glottic cancer into T2a (normal VCM) and T2b (impaired VCM) in future TNM revisions.

Systemic Immunosuppression to Reduce Surgical Intervention in ANCA‐Negative Subglottic Stenosis

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS) typically follows an indolent course managed with surgical dilatation, though a subset demonstrates aggressive, recurrent disease. In this retrospective cohort study, systemic immunosuppression significantly prolonged inter‐dilation intervals in both granulomatosis with polyangiitis‐associated SGS and an “atypical”

Socioeconomic Deprivation and Vocal Handicap in Adults With Voice Disorders

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This study examined the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and quality of life as measured by the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) in adults with voice disorders. Patients living with socioeconomic deprivation experienced greater voice‐related handicap from voice disorders than those from more affluent backgrounds, even when controlling for ...

Correlation between KPNA2 and ANXA3 expression and ferroptosis-related genes in laryngeal cancer tissue and clinical prognostic value

open access: yes徐州医科大学学报
Objective To investigate the expression of karyopherin α2 (KPNA2) and annexin A3 (ANXA3) in laryngeal cancer, and to explore their relationship with ferroptosis related genes (FRGs) and prognostic significance.

Tracheostomy vs. Delayed Extubation in Head and Neck Reconstruction: A Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
High volume centers are trialing delayed extubation as an alternative management approach to tracheostomy in patients undergoing head and neck reconstruction (HNR). This systematic review shows that patients in the delayed extubation group are four times less likely to suffer an airway complication (p = 0.295) and eight times less likely to suffer a ...

A standardized comparison of peri-operative complications after minimally invasive esophagectomy: Ivor Lewis versus McKeown. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BACKGROUND: While our institutional approach to esophageal resection for cancer has traditionally favored a minimally invasive (MI) 3-hole, McKeown esophagectomy (MIE 3-hole) during the last five years several factors has determined a shift in our ...

A Randomized Single‐Center Proof of Principle Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness and Safety of a Hydrogel Laser Treatment Patch in Laser Hair Removal

open access: yesLasers in Surgery and Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Laser hair removal (LHR) is a commonly performed aesthetic procedure known to generate a hazardous laser plume composed of toxic chemicals, ultrafine particles, and potentially infectious biological materials. Current mitigation strategies, such as smoke evacuation systems, are costly and often used inconsistently, highlighting the ...

Mass spectrometry imaging of N‐linked glycans: Fundamentals and recent advances

open access: yesMass Spectrometry Reviews, EarlyView.
Abstract With implications in several medical conditions, N‐linked glycosylation is one of the most important posttranslation modifications present in all living organisms. Due to their nontemplate synthesis, glycan structures are extraordinarily complex and require multiple analytical techniques for complete structural elucidation.
