In this nationwide inpatient database study of 5229 patients aged 70–79 years who underwent esophagectomy for cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, overlap propensity score weighting analysis showed that neoadjuvant docetaxel‐based triplet regimen (docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5‐fluorouracil) was not associated with a higher incidence of perioperative ...

Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Tube Timing in Head and Neck Cancer Surgery
Objective To examine outcomes and complications in patients receiving a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube on the same day of head and neck cancer (HNC) surgery versus later in hospitalization. Methods The 2003–2014 Nationwide Inpatient Sample was queried for patients undergoing ablative HNC procedures who had a PEG tube placed.

A robotic stylet is proposed based on a multisegment continuum mechanism for specialized assisting endotracheal intubation. Its geometric parameters are designed based on medical images and kinematic is derived. A prototype is fabricated, and its kinematics and application are experimentally verified. These robotic systems can improve accurate, secure,

Bacterial Pneumonia in Dogs and Cats: An Update. [PDF]
Bacterial pneumonia is a common clinical diagnosis in dogs but seems to occur less often in cats. Underlying causes include viral infection, aspiration injury, foreign body inhalation, and defects in clearance of respiratory secretions. Identification of

KMT2B-related disorders: expansion of the phenotypic spectrum and long-term efficacy of deep brain stimulation [PDF]
Heterozygous mutations in KMT2B are associated with an early-onset, progressive, and often complex dystonia (DYT28). Key characteristics of typical disease include focal motor features at disease presentation, evolving through a caudocranial pattern into generalized dystonia, with prominent oromandibular, laryngeal, and cervical involvement.

Vocal wow in an adapted reflex resonance model [PDF]
Vocal wow is a slow 0.2 - 3 Hz modulation of the voice that may be distinguished from the 4 - 7 Hz modulation of tremor or vibrato. We use a simple model of laryngeal muscle activation, mediated by time-delayed auditory feedback, to show that wow may arise due to Andronov-Hopf bifurcation.

Use of laryngeal muscle evoked potential recording for experimental vagus nerve stimulation
Laryngeal muscle evoked potentials (LMEPs) reflect the activation of laryngeal muscles induced by vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) via vagal Aα‐motor fibers. LMEP recordings are minimally invasive and provide a feasible, reliable method for assessing the integrity of the electrode‐nerve interface during experimental VNS in rodents.

Case-control studies for rare diseases: improved estimation of several risks and of feature dependences [PDF]
To capture the dependences of a disease on several risk factors, a challenge is to combine model-based estimation with evidence-based arguments. Standard case-control methods allow estimation of the dependences of a rare disease on several regressors via logistic regressions.

Background: The prediction of difficult mask ventilation (DMV) and difficult intubation (DI) are key questions in anesthesia fields. DMV or DI related to pharyngeal and laryngeal diseases are a special kind of difficult airways.
