Performance of photomultipliers in the context of laser-induced incandescence

Applied Optics, 2017
Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are widely used as detectors for laser-induced incandescence (LII), a diagnostics method for gas-borne particles that requires signal detection over a large dynamic range with nanosecond time resolution around the signal peak.

Application of laser-induced incandescence to suspended carbon black particles

Optics Letters, 2007
For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, laser-induced incandescence (LII) has successfully been applied to carbon black suspensions. A linear correlation between the experimentally derived signal decay time and the mean primary particle size, determined by transmission electron microscopy, for different carbon black particles was found ...

General error model for analysis of laser-induced incandescence signals

Applied Optics, 2017
This paper presents a novel error model for TiRe-LII signals and illustrates how the model can be used to diagnose a detection system, quantify uncertainties in TiRe-LII, and characterize fluctuations in the measured process. Noise in a single TiRe-LII measurement shot obeys a Poisson-Gaussian noise model.

Laser-induced incandescence measurements of soot in turbulent pool fires

Applied Optics, 2010
We present what we believe to be the first application of the laser-induced incandescence (LII) technique to large-scale fire testing. The construction of an LII instrument for fire measurements is presented in detail. Soot volume fraction imaging from 2 m diameter pool fires burning blended toluene/methanol liquid fuels is demonstrated along with a ...
