Short-pulse laser - plasma interactions

Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 1996
Recent theoretical and experimental research with short-pulse, high-intensity lasers is surveyed with particular emphasis on new physical processes that occur in interactions with low- and high-density plasmas. Basic models of femtosecond laser - solid interaction are described including collisional absorption, transport, hydrodynamics, fast electron ...

Refraction effects in laser-plasma interaction

Optics Communications, 1988
Abstract Refraction effects on a laser beam focused into a low density plasma have been studied. Density gradients were assumed to be radial and axially symmetric around the beam axis, as they usually appear in laser produced plasmas. Simple conditions for significant ray bending have been obtained.

Diagnostics of Laser-Plasma Interactions

2013
The field of laser-plasma diagnostics is large, and is certainly too big to be covered fully in a short article. Here, we concentrate on a number of diagnostics which are of relevance to two areas of significant current interest, namely (1) relativistic laser-plasma interactions, and (2) hohlraum-driven inertial confinement fusion.

Interaction of laser plasma bunches

Soviet Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1991
An experimental investigation was made of the interaction between two plasma bunches expanding in vacuum (p≤10−4 Torr). The spatial structure of the radiation emitted by the interacting plasma bunches was determined. The radiation was in the form of spectral lines due to the Be I-III ions and it was found that the radiation emitted by ions with a given

Proton Shock Acceleration in Laser-Plasma Interactions

Physical Review Letters, 2004
The formation of strong, high Mach number (2-3), electrostatic shocks by laser pulses incident on overdense plasma slabs is observed in one- and two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, for a wide range of intensities, pulse durations, target thicknesses, and densities.

Nonlinear theory of intense laser-plasma interactions

Physical Review Letters, 1990
A nonlinear theory of intense laser-plasma interactions is developed and used to describe relativistic optical guiding, coherent harmonic radiation production, and nonlinear plasma wakefield generation. Relativistic optical guiding is found to be ineffective in preventing the leading portion (\ensuremath{\le} a plasma wavelength) of a laser pulse from ...

Investigation of Laser Plasma Interactions

2021
Both short and long pulse laser plasma interactions are investigated by theoreti- cal analysis and modern computational techniques. An extensive set of simulations of short pulse laser plasma based particle accelerators are performed with the aim of improving performance and diagnostics of the accelerators.

High intensity laser plasma interaction

Physics Reports, 1985
Abstract Basic mechanisms, linear and non-linear, are reviewed. Light absorption may take place linearly through inverse bremsstrahlung. Together with usual heat transport by electrons it leads to a linear gas dynamical regime whose main formulas are given.
