Source height and contact with terrestrial soil drive transplanted epiphyte performance
Tropical vascular epiphytes, such as this orchid Peristeria pendula, performed worse when experimentally transplanted to new substrates in contact with terrestrial soil, versus substrates just above the soil surface. The results are some of the first empirical data supporting the epiphyte enemy escape hypothesis.

Understanding the heterogeneity of biomass accumulation in second‐growth tropical forests following land use abandonment is important for informing ecosystem carbon models and forest restoration efforts. Using airborne lidar data, we quantify patterns and controls on aboveground biomass accumulation in second‐growth forests of Puerto Rico.

This paper aims to study and quantify the induced error due to the deflection of verticals (DOV) when integrating different sensors, focusing on GNSS and INS for 3D mapping in airborne mapping. It is shown that the DOV effect should be considered for direct georeferencing because the DOV components are in the order of (or larger than) INS uncertainty ...

Litter‐trapping tank bromeliads in five different forests: Carbon and nutrient pools and fluxes
Bromeliads are the most abundant litter‐trapping plants in Neotropical forest canopies. We analyzed the carbon and nutrient pools and fluxes in tank bromeliads in different forests along an elevation gradient. Only a small percentage of the annual litterfall (<3%) is trapped by tank bromeliads.

NIRS technique for high throughput phenotyping for cassava and yam. Summary The review aimed to identify the different high‐throughput phenotyping (HTP) techniques that used for quality evaluation in cassava and yam breeding programmes, and this has provided insights towards the development of metrics and their application in cassava and yam ...

Abstract Changes in large‐scale vegetation structure triggered by processes such as deforestation, wildfires, and tree die‐off alter surface structure, energy balance, and associated albedo—all critical for land surface models. Characterizing these properties usually requires long‐term data, precluding characterization of rapid vegetation changes such ...

Possible explanations for different surface quality in laser cutting with 1 micron and 10 microns beams [PDF]
In laser cutting of thick steel sheets, quality difference is observed between cut surfaces obtained with 1 micron and 10 micron laser beams. This paper investigates physical mechanisms for this interesting and important problem of the wavelength ...

Net primary productivity and litter decomposition rates in two distinct Amazonian peatlands
Our understanding of carbon cycling in tropical peatlands is limited by the lack of data on forest productivity and litter decomposition. Here we present measurements from two floristically distinct Amazonian peatland forests, a palm‐dominated swamp and a thin‐stemmed hardwood swamp.
