The performance of a ruby laser amplifier is described and compared with a theoretical model. The ruby laser amplifier was driven by a Q-switched laser oscillator with a stable output, whose properties are due, in part, to a newly developed output coupler and a spinning roof-top prism for Q-spoiling.

Above-threshold laser amplifier
Physical Review Letters, 1991We have measured gain profiles by light-beating techniques for an argon-ion laser operated above threshold. The observed behavior is interpreted by developing a theory which incorporates four-wave mixing of signal and image frequencies. The gain shows the typical characteristics of a second-order phase transition.

IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1983Dye-laser oscillators and amplifiers are studied theoretically with inclusion of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). Assuming pencil-like geometry in both cases, laser signal intensity and ASE intensity are described with appropriate photon-transport equations.

Amplified Extended Modes in Random Lasers
Physical Review Letters, 2004We report on a new random laser phenomenon that gives rise to narrow emission modes without requiring optical cavities. Sharp emission peaks are observed experimentally over a broad range of scattering strengths and analyzed in numerical calculations.
