Lasers and amplifiers for networks
LEOS Summer Topical on Optical Multiple Access Networks, 2002Summary form only given. Recent progress on semiconductor laser diodes (LDs) and optical amplifiers is summarised from the viewpoint of optical network system applications. Manufacturing techniques for InGaAsP/InP have been progressing rapidly. Recent efforts have been focused on high-speed response, narrow spectral linewidth, wavelength tuning, and ...

Annual Meeting Optical Society of America, 1988
Recently there has been a renewal of interest in the use of fibers doped with optically active ions, principally rare earths, as active devices in optical fiber communications and sensor systems. This increase in activity has been driven by improved methods for incorporating dopants into telecommunications-grade fiber, the availability of laser pumps ...

Ultrafast gain quenching in laser amplifiers
Optics Letters, 1991A versatile and simple passive optical technique for quenching gain in laser amplifiers on picosecond and subpicosecond time scales is described. The scheme can be used to eliminate undesirable postpulses or to reduce laser pulse widths. A 30-fold suppression of satellite pulses from a synchronously pumped amplified dye laser is demonstrated.

Amplified Spontaneous Emission Effects In Laser Amplifiers
SPIE Proceedings, 1989We investigate the effects of amplified spontaneous emission on laser amplifier performance. In particular, we are interested in the dependence of gain, signal to noise ratio and efficiency on excitation, facet reflectivity and input laser intensity.

Dielectric Waveguide Amplifiers and Lasers.
2014The performance of semiconductor amplifiers and lasers has made them the preferred choice for optical gain on a micro-chip. In the past few years, we have demonstrated that also rare-earth-ion-doped dielectric waveguides show remarkable performance, ranging from a small-signal gain per unit length of 1000 dB/cm, via integrated distributed-feedback ...

Fibre lasers and amplifiers [PDF]
A brief review is given of the current status of research in the field of rare-earth doped fibre lasers and amplifiers. The merits of making such devices in fibre form are discussed, together with their potential applications.

Nonlinear Lasers and Amplifiers
2004Current optical transmission systems incorporate a mix of two multiplex techniques. Many different low-bit-rate channels are interlaced in the time domain (OTDM) to form a high-bit-rate channel. These high-bit-rate channels with data rates of 10 or 40 Gbit/s are then again multiplexed in the wavelength domain (WDM).

Some Other Lasers and Laser Amplifiers
2011We present further types of lasers: dye laser; chemical laser; X-ray laser; organic laser. And we discuss the principle of laser amplifiers. Another topic concerns optical damage.
