Laser beams and resonators [PDF]

open access: possibleProceedings of the IEEE, 1966
This paper is a review of the theory-of laser beams and resonators. It is meant to be tutorial in nature and useful in scope. No attempt is made to be exhaustive in the treatment. Rather, emphasis is placed on formulations and derivations which lead to basic understanding and on results which bear practical significance.

Airy beam laser [PDF]

open access: possibleOptics Letters, 2011
A method to design lasers that emit an arbitrary beam profile is studied. In these lasers, output-coupling is performed by a diffraction grating that imposes a phase and amplitude distribution onto the diffracted light. A solid-state laser emitting beams with a two-dimensional Airy intensity profile is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally.

Comparison of nondiffracting laser beams

Optics Communications, 1990
Abstract We study the near axis power transport efficiency of truncated nondiffracting beams by presenting a mathematical method able to compute it, in the limits set by the Fresnel approximation. We apply our technique to truncated Bessel, Weber and gaussian beams showing the advantages of the nondiffracting beams over the other.

Properties of Laser Beams [PDF]

open access: possible, 1976
In Chapter 1 it was stated that the most characteristic properties of laser beams are (i) monochromaticity, (ii) coherence (spatial and temporal), (iii) directionality, (iv) brightness. The material presented in earlier chapters allows us to now examine these properties in more detail and compare them with the properties of conventional light sources ...

Laser Beam Machining

2013
The cost of cutting hard-to-machine materials by conventional mechanical machining processes is high due to the low material removal rate and short tool life, and some materials are not possible to be cut by the conventional machining process at all. Laser beam machining is the machining processes involving a laser beam as a heat source.

Diffractionless Laser Beams [PDF]

open access: possible47th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting including The New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2009
This paper describes the properties of “diffractionless ” laser beams, also called Bessel beams, for long ranges. They have the property of not spreading nor does the intensity distribution change, up until a maximum range; after which the beam spreads leaving zero intensity on the central axis.

Laser beam characterization [PDF]

open access: possibleProceedings of LFNM'2000. 2nd International Workshop on Laser and Fiber-Optical Networks Modeling (Cat. No.00EX419), 2002
In commercial applications the laser beam is a product and then it has to be characterized by the set of the parameters to be compared and to be used. These parameters are standardized and ISO-standards are the basis for the developing of national ones.
