The kindest cut [laser and water cutting]
Engineering & Technology, 2010If you doubt water's ability to cut hard materials, just think of the Grand Canyon. Granted, it was on a longer turnaround than the average cutting job, but by using a thin high-pressure jet initially of water alone, but then including abrasive powder the process can be made to work rather faster. Cutting machines of this type are now widely used.

Laser cutting is a thermal separation process widely used in shaping and contour cutting applications. There are, however, gaps in understanding the dynamics of the process, especially issues related to cut quality. This work describes the advances in fundamental physical modelling and process monitoring of laser cutting, as well as time varying ...

Industrial Robot: An International Journal, 1989
Laser cutting of small stainless steel batches in 3‐D became economic at Darchem Engineering when a 250 W Nd‐YAG laser beam was carried to the cutting head on an articulated robot using fibre‐optic cable. Jack Hollingum went to see it.

A Study of the Laser Cutting Process: Influence of Laser Power and Cutting Speed on Cut Quality
2010In the present study high power CO2 laser cutting of 304 stainless steel sheets was considered and the influence of laser power levels and the cutting speed on the resulting cut quality were examined. The laser cutting quality was assessed through measuring the dross height attachment to the cut edges and the kerf width variation.
