Hemorrhoidectomy — laser vs. nonlaser

Two hundred twenty-six patients underwent operative hemorrhoidectomy by a single surgeon in a three-year period. In 170 patients (75.2 percent), the operation was performed utilizing the CO2 laser. Standard closed hemorrhoidectomy was done in the rest. Patients were monitored prospectively for postoperative pain, wound healing, and complications.

Group A received the Nd-YAG laser phototherapy for internal hemorrhoid combined with the CO2 laser for external hemorrhoid. Group B was treated with closed Ferguson hemorrhoidectomy. Thirty-two patients are subjected to operation using CO2 laser. In nine of them laser submucous hemorrhoidectomy is performed--a procedure also developed in the Department of Abdominal Surgery.
