The Megajoule laser program – Ignition at hand

Journal de Physique IV (Proceedings), 2006
The French Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique (CEA) is currently building the Laser MegaJoule (LMJ), a 240-beam laser facility, at the CEA Laboratory CESTA near Bordeaux. LMJ will be a cornerstone of CEA's “Programme Simulation”, the French Stockpile Stewardship Program.

State of Development of Laser Ignition

MTZ worldwide, 2009
A holistic optimization of combustion engines with the aim of conserving resources has to include an improvement of the ignition mechanism as well. In the field of spark-ignition combustion engines the development of laser-induced ignition systems is advanced worldwide. This article of the Bayreuth Engine Research Center (BERC) gives an overview of the

Ignition and Flameholding Characteristics of Laser Igniters in Supersonic Airstreams

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2004
An investigation on effects of a focused laser pulse for combustion enhancement characteristics was conducted for supersonic airstreams with a transverse hydrogen‐fuel injection. Numerical simulations using a time‐dependant Navier‐Stokes equation with finite‐rate chemistry were conducted to elucidate laser‐induced ignition and mixing enhancement ...

Spark and Laser Ignition

2009
In the context of nonshock initiation of secondary explosives, electric sparks and lasers represent sources of external power that may stimulate exothermic reaction in energetic materials, and generate enough heat and reaction product gases to ignite a propagating combustion reaction.

Development of a laser ignited actuator

33rd Joint Propulsion Conference and Exhibit, 1997
EG&G Optoelectronics has an internally funded R&D Program designed to bring a laser ignited pyrotechnic actuator system to the market place. The design incorporates miniature lenses to efficiently focus the laser light output, from a high power EG&G Optoelectronics InGaAs laser diode, into the explosive powder.

Development of a Laser Ignited Actuator

39th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference and Exhibit, 2003
The development and production activities of a laser -ignited actuator will be described in this paper. The laser diode actuator package is comprised of two separate parts, a laser diode assembly and a loaded subassembly. The laser diode assembly is made up of a solid state laser diode, a lens cap with a collimating lens sealed in place, and an ...

Laser ignition of liquid propellants

Symposium (International) on Combustion, 1991
Following previous studies of electrical ignition of liquid propellants in plasma jets, initiation by focused laser beams is studied both by fast cine shadowgraphy and by recording permanent gas release as a measure of decomposition. Unlike military propellants, droplets of aqueous mixtures of nitrate salts of hydroxylamine with a 4-carbon aliphatic ...

Laser Ignition Of Oil Spills

SPIE Proceedings, 1987
A technique for using two lasers operating in tandem to remotely ignite oil pools in the harsh Arctic environment has been developed. A CW CO2 laser "preheats" a localized area of the oil pool for several seconds, thereby raising the surface temperature above the fire-point. A fire is then ignited by a focused high-power pulse from a second laser.

Theoretical investigation of ignition with lasers

Chinese Optics Letters, 2012
A fundamental theoretical investigation of laser ignition is reported. Ignition is happened in an explosion bomb which equipped with visualization windows and all aspects of the phenomenon such as plasmas, shock waves, ignition kernels, and propagating flames are observed by high-speed schlieren photography.
