This paper describes how a conventional Pulfrich refractometer can be modified for use with laser light sources for the precise determination of the refractive index of liquids. Measurements carried out on water, several organic liquids, and KCI solutions are reported.

Stopping Atoms with Laser Light
Physical Review Letters, 1985We have produced a sample of free sodium atoms at rest in the laboratory by decelerating atoms in an atomic beam using momentum transfer from a counterpropagating, resonant laser beam. These atoms have a density of about 105 cm−3 and a velocity spread of about 15 m/s full width at half maximum corresponding to a kinetic temperature less than 100 mK.

In this chapter, physics of luminescence and laser oscillations are treated in detail. First the definition of Einstein coefficients is introduced to connect absorption with spontaneous emission and stimulated emission. Then the spontaneous and stimulated emission rates are derived from the perturbation theory.

Because most laser procedures use the heating effect of the light and given the number of parameters that may be varied--such as power density, power, pulsing, and heating of fiber tips and probes--significant overlap in applications of the various lasers can result.

Let There Be Light-the Laser in Dentistry
Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, 1992A damp and dull London day in March somewhat contradicted the title of the meeting of the Odontology Section of the RSM, Let there be light--the laser in dentistry, but there was no doubt, once inside, that the organisers had, with perfect timing, caught the interest of the profession as a Barnes Room packed to capacity was greeted by the president of ...
