Tailoring Laser Powder Bed Fusion and Post‐Processing Parameters for JIS SKD61 Tool Steels: Surface Roughness, Microstructure, and Mechanical Properties

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Laser powder bed fusion of JIS SKD61 tool steel is systematically optimized using a Taguchi design and ANOVA. Hatch spacing and layer thickness are identified as dominant parameters controlling surface roughness and tensile strength. Subsequent tempering at 600°C improves microstructural stability and mechanical performance, enabling high‐density SKD61

Press Hardening for Sustainable Lightweight Chassis Design in Heavy‐Duty Vehicles: A Material Performance and Life Cycle Assessment Approach

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
The article explores how high‐strength steels and press hardening revolutionize lightweight chassis design for heavy‐duty vehicles. It reveals that press hardened steels combined with shot peening can cut weight by up to 34% and reduce environmental impact by 21%–32%.

The Formation and Hardening Mechanisms of Multiscale Gradient Structures Tailoring by Explosive Hardening and Annealing in Commercially Pure Titanium

open access: yesRare Metals, Volume 45, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Gradient structures (GS) introduced by plastic deformation have been shown to effectively enhance the surface properties of metallic materials. However, the GS fabricated by existing methods often suffers from limited hardening depth and limited control over the GS layer, which constrain their engineering applications.

Increasing the Reuse Potential of High‐Strength Steels by Extending the Fatigue Life through Surface Treatments

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4326-4336, August 2026.
Surface reconditioning through mechanical and electrochemical polishing is shown to extend the fatigue life of predamaged 42CrMo4 steel by over 12 times. By removing ≈100 μm of surface material, surface‐driven fatigue damage is mitigated. This study introduces a reuse potential metric to evaluate fatigue recovery and support sustainable steel reuse. Structure and fatigue of titanium alloy samples under laser impact treatment

open access: yesВестник Самарского университета: Аэрокосмическая техника, технологии и машиностроение
The effect of laser shock peening on the level and depth of residual stresses, microstructure and fatigue life in titanium alloy samples is considered. At present, shot peening and hydro shot peening are most widely used in the aircraft engine industry ...

Laser Peening of Metals - Enabling Laser Technology [PDF]

open access: yesMRS Proceedings, 1997
ABSTRACTLaser shot peening, a surface treatment for metals, is shown to induce compressive residual stresses of over 0.040 inch to provide improved resistance to vairous forms of failure. A solid state laser technology employing Nd:glass slabs and phase conjugation enables this process to move into high throughput production processing.

Toughening of TiO2 via Femtosecond Laser Shock Peening

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Most ceramics have low fracture toughness (<5 MPa m$\sqrt{m}$) at room temperature. This work explores the feasibility of toughening TiO2 via femtosecond laser shock peening (fs‐LSP). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses reveal LSP‐induced the creation of high‐density stacking faults, dislocation structures, and twin boundaries in ...

A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 28, Issue 14, 22 July 2026.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.

Effect of Carburizing Composite Laser-Shock Processing on Properties and Microstructure of 20CrNiMo Steel

open access: yesMetals, 2023
In the service process of gears, premature fatigue failure or fracture of gears is often caused by poor surface performance. 20CrNiMo steel is a commonly used material for gears.
