High power laser diode driver based on power converter technology

IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 1997
This paper describes the design of a high speed semiconductor laser diode driver designed for driving 500 mW to 1.5 W diodes at full optical power modulation up to frequencies of 10 MHz. The duty cycle of the modulation may be varied. A switching power-converter based current source allows a higher power delivery efficiency to the diode than in ...

Optimal laser wavelength for efficient laser power converter operation over temperature

Applied Physics Letters, 2016
A temperature dependent modeling study is conducted on a GaAs laser power converter to identify the optimal incident laser wavelength for optical power transmission. Furthermore, the respective temperature dependent maximal conversion efficiencies in the radiative limit as well as in a practically achievable limit are presented.

Efficiency limits of laser power converters for optical power transfer applications

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2013
We have developed III-V-based high-efficiency laser power converters (LPCs), optimized specifically for converting monochromatic laser radiation at the eye-safe wavelength of 1.55 m into electrical power. The applications of these photovoltaic cells include high-efficiency space-based and terrestrial laser power transfer and subsequent conversion to ...

Long-wavelength laser power converters for optical fibers

Conference Record of the Twenty Sixth IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference - 1997, 2002
Measured responsivity and illuminated I-V data are presented for III-V In/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As-based photovoltaic cells with bandgaps of 1.42 eV (GaAs), 0.74 (lattice-matched In/sub 0.53/Ga/sub 0.47/As), and 0.55 eV ("extended" lattice-mismatched In/sub 0.7/Ga/sub 0.3/As) relevant to their application as laser power converters (LPCs) sensitive to ...

On the alignment tolerance of photovoltaic laser power converters

Optik, 2017
Abstract This work addresses the alignment of a light spot onto photovoltaic laser power converters for power-by-light applications. A model to compare the alignment tolerances of different cell designs by means of the maximum acceptable misalignment is introduced. Monolithic interconnected multi-segment cells, which are commonly used as high-voltage

GaInAsP/InP-Based Laser Power Converters (λ = 1064 nm)

Semiconductors, 2018
Photovoltaic laser-power converters with irradiation of the substrate side are developed based on lattice-matched GaInAs/InP heterostructures formed by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy. Variants of antireflection coatings with a reflection minimum at a wavelength of λ = 1064 nm as well as features of chip bonding using soldering pastes with different ...

Laser (λ = 809 nm) power converter based on GaAs

Semiconductors, 2017
Laser-power converters with a wavelength of λ = 809 nm are fabricated on the basis of single-junction AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures grown by the method of liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE). Photovoltaic modules with an operating voltage of 4 V for converting radiation of various densities are developed and tested.

Photovoltaic laser-power converter based on AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures

Semiconductors, 2016
Photovoltaic laser-power converters for a wavelength of λ = 809 nm are developed and fabricated on the basis of single-junction AlGaAs/GaAs structures grown by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy. The parameters of the photovoltaic structure constituted by an optical “window” and a cladding layer are optimized by mathematical simulation.
