Phylogenetic insights into Dyopsinae (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae): Resolving the systematic position of Thiacidinae

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 2, April‐June 2026.
In this study, a new phylogenetic study reclassifies the moth subfamilies Dyopsinae and Thiacidinae. For the first time, Thiacidas postica—the type species of Thiacidinae—was sequenced and shown to belong within Dyopsinae, in the Ceroctena clade. As a result, Thiacidinae is reinstated as the tribe Thiacidini (stat. nov.) within Dyopsinae.

Conservation challenges and opportunities for native apple (Malus) species in Canada

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 1, Page 134-156, January 2026.
Apple, one of the world's most widely cultivated and economically important fruit crops, has two wild relatives native to Canada. In this review, we describe the importance of these native apple species to Indigenous heritage and the current threats the species faces due to pests, diseases, and habitat loss.

Wingtip Speed of the Lift‐Generating Downstroke in Lepidoptera During Takeoff Depends on Wing Loading

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
We measured wingtip speed, as an indicator of angular velocity, during the single downstroke that lifts butterflies and moths from the ground to flight. High‐speed analysis captured 745 takeoff events across 131 lepidopteran species. Wingtip speed showed no correlation with forewing length, a proxy for the Reynolds number and wingtip speed. In contrast,

Contribution to the Neotropical Campylochetini: A review of Campylocheta Rondani, 1859 (Diptera: Tachinidae) with new synonyms, three new species and an identification key to Neotropical species

open access: yesAustral Entomology, Volume 64, Issue 4, November 2025.
Abstract The large genus Campylocheta Rondani, 1859, comprising 48 species, occurs in all major biogeographical regions of the world, except Antarctica. Homohypochaeta Townsend, 1927 and Hypochaetopsis Townsend, 1915 are two Neotropical genera similar to Campylocheta, with only two and one species respectively.

International Biological Flora: Tsuga canadensis*

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 10, Page 3037-3080, October 2025.
Eastern Hemlock is a long‐lived forest tree of eastern North America known for its deep shade and home given to many organisms. Despite surviving large‐scale clearing for agriculture when Europeans arrived, it returned to dominate when the land was abandoned in the mid 1800s.

Genetic Diversity and Phylogeographic Structure of the Edible Caterpillars of Gynanisa maja and Implications for the Sustainability of the Species in Namibia

open access: yesIntegrative Conservation, Volume 4, Issue 3, Page 405-415, September 2025.
Assessing the genetic diversity of edible insects harvested from the wild is a pre‐requisite for designing conservation and management policies. The caterpillars of Gynanisa maja (Saturniidae) are harvested in large numbers in mopane woodlands in southern Africa, where they represent a seasonal source of income and nutrition to many rural communities ...

Assessing predation pressure of Vespa velutina on local fauna through DNA metabarcoding

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 326, Issue 4, Page 329-338, August 2025.
This study investigates the predation pressure exerted by the invasive yellow‐legged hornet (Vespa velutina) on native insect populations in Mallorca, using DNA metabarcoding to analyze their diet. Results reveal a diverse prey spectrum, including key insect groups such as Apidae (bees), Calliphoridae (blowflies), and Vespidae (wasps), with no ...
