Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...

A Time-Series Model for Varying Worker Ability in Heterogeneous Distributed Computing Systems
In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating the time-dependent ability of workers participating in distributed matrix-vector multiplication over heterogeneous clusters.

User Preference Modeling Based on Deep Belief Network and Latent Variable Model [PDF]
To address complex iterative computations,large-scale intermediate results and ineffective inference of user preference modeling from high dimensional and sparse user rating data, this paper proposes a user preference modeling method based on Deep Belief ...

Modeling homophily and stochastic equivalence in symmetric relational data [PDF]
This article discusses a latent variable model for inference and prediction of symmetric relational data. The model, based on the idea of the eigenvalue decomposition, represents the relationship between two nodes as the weighted inner-product of node ...

HIV‐1 establishes immediate latency in T cells expressing the viral Nef protein
Nef is a viral protein often omitted from HIV‐1 reporter viruses. Consequently, its role in viral latency is unclear. We developed three novel dual reporter HIV‐1 derivatives that express Nef and allow for detection of latent and productive infection. Using these reporters, we show that Nef does not affect the establishment of immediate viral latency ...

Scoring ordinal variables for constructing composite indicators
In order to provide composite indicators of latent variables, for example of customer satisfaction, it is opportune to identify the structure of the latent variable, in terms of the assignment of items to the subscales defining the latent variable ...

Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP9) drives ovarian cancer progression. Using MMP9‐null cells (M9‐KO) created from ovarian cancer cells, we found MMP9 loss did not block Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)‐driven E‐cadherin dissolution or EMT but delayed and reduced EGF‐driven membrane protrusions. Transient MMP9 re‐expression drove membrane protrusion.
