Shaping a root system: regulating lateral versus primary root growth
Trends in Plant Science, 2014Primary and lateral roots comprise root systems, which are vital to the growth and survival of plants. Several molecular mechanisms associated with primary and lateral root growth have been described, including some common regulatory factors for their initiation and development.

Regulation of Lateral Root Positions
Botanical Gazette, 1969Potential sites for the origin of lateral roots are influenced by the position of the previously established lateral. Distribution studies conducted on six monocot species consistently show lateral roots organized in a nonrandom, dispersed pattern. Further measurements indicate a three-dimensional zone of suppression near lateral root positions.
