This article characterizes hypersensitivity reactions during anesthetic-surgical procedures. This integrative literature review was conducted in the LILACS, CINAHL, COCHRANE and MEDLINE databases including papers published from 1966 to September 2011.

Hypersensitivity to natural latex

open access: bronzeJournal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1989
Rubber hypersensitivity is well described but usually as a contact dermatitis caused by chemicals added during the process of making natural latex or synthetic rubber. IgE-mediated reactions, mainly contact urticaria, have rarely been reported in Europe. We report a case of immediate hypersensitivity to latex.

Latex Hypersensitivity in Spinal Cord Injured Adult Patients [PDF]

open access: bronzeAnaesthesia and Intensive Care, 2001
Latex hypersensitivity is a major cause of anaphylaxis during anaesthesia. Patients with spina bifida, health care or rubber industry workers have been considered at risk for latex sensitization. By analogy, the existence of other at-risk subsets of patients with latex exposure due to frequent surgical procedures has been suggested.

Latex Fruit Syndrome and Periodontitis - A Missing Link

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacy and Bioallied Sciences
Latex allergy affects up to 6% of the general population and healthcare workers more frequently. 30-50% of individuals with natural rubber latex (NRL) allergy show hypersensitivity to plant-derived foods, particularly freshly consumed fruits.

Risk factor analysis of iodinated contrast medium-related hypersensitivity reactions [PDF]

open access: yesInsights into Imaging
Hypersensitivity reactions caused by iodinated contrast media (ICM) are by definition type B adverse reactions and therefore, they are not predictable.

Latex-induced dermal and pulmonary hypersensitivity in rabbits

open access: bronzeJournal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1994
Natural rubber latex (NRL) causes immediate, IgE-mast cell-mediated reactions in sensitized individuals, especially among health care workers and children with spina bifida. The immunopathogenesis of the reaction is obscure. To study the immunologic mechanisms of NRL allergy, rabbits were sensitized with two nonammoniated and one ammoniated NRL antigens.
