Latex Hypersensitivity Reactions Despite Prophylaxis

Allergy and Asthma Proceedings, 1992
Latex rubber hypersensitivity represents a significant problem facing the medical, surgical, radiologic, and dental professions. As a tertiary care center, the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia has a large population of patients with spina bifida and complex genitourinary anomalies; a number of these children have latex rubber allergy, which may first

Latex Hypersensitivity: A New and Unexpected Problem

Hospital Practice, 1992
Allergy to such latex products as surgical gloves is a growing medical problem. About 3% of hospital physicians and nurses are affected, and higher rates have been reported in surgical units. Allergic reactions may be delayed (and usually local) or immediate, with systemic derangements that are potentially fatal.

[Latex hypersensitivity in children].

Harefuah, 1993
Latex (natural rubber), which is obtained from the Hevea brasiliensis tree, is known to cause contact urticaria and aggravate pre-existing atopic dermatitis. We present a 4.5 year-old boy with bladder exstrophy and epispadias who developed generalized urticaria and bronchospasm during general anesthesia prior to correction of the epispadias.

Latex-induced dermal and pulmonary hypersensitivity in rabbits

Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1994
Natural rubber latex (NRL) causes immediate, IgE-mast cell-mediated reactions in sensitized individuals, especially among health care workers and children with spina bifida. The immunopathogenesis of the reaction is obscure. To study the immunologic mechanisms of NRL allergy, rabbits were sensitized with two nonammoniated and one ammoniated NRL antigens.

Management of the latex hypersensitive patient in the endodontic office

Journal of Endodontics, 1999
This case report documents the treatment of an endodontic patient who experienced a type 1 hypersensitivity reaction to latex. The dental, medical, and environmental aspects of treating latex allergic patients are reviewed. Because gutta-percha and latex rubber are similar compounds, the possible cross-reactivity of these materials is discussed.

LATEX HYPERSENSITIVITY: PERSONAL DATA AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

Immunopharmacology and Immunotoxicology, 2002
Latex allergy is an increasingly common condition, because use of latex products is widespread. The reactions to latex manufactures can be classified as allergic and non-allergic, these are the most common. Latex proteins are responsible for immediate IgE-mediated hypersensitivity allergic reactions.

Intraoperative anaphylactic reaction due to latex hypersensitivity

Urology, 1991
Severe anaphylactic reaction secondary to latex allergy has lately been recognized and reported especially in individuals with spina bifida. We report a case of severe intraoperative anaphylactic reaction due to latex allergy. Preoperative testing for latex allergy may be helpful in determining latex allergy.

Latex hypersensitivity: a case study.

Annals of allergy, 1993
We report 16 cases of latex allergy and the diagnostic methods used to determine sensitivity. By history, eight had usually experienced anaphylaxis during operative procedures, and eight experienced contact urticaria. Skin prick tests were positive in all subjects and negative in ten controls.

[Latex hypersensitivity: a foreseeable accident?].

Cahiers d'anesthesiologie, 1996
This paper describes another case of severe anaphylactic reaction due to allergy to natural rubber during anaesthesia in a child without known risk factors. The day after surgery the child reported that he experienced a few months ago an impressive skin reaction of both face and lips after inflating a latex balloon.
