Prospective Lava Tubes at Hellas Planitia [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, 2019, 2020
After surveying 1,500 images from MRO, this investigation has identified three candidate lava tubes in the vicinity of Hadriacus Mons as prospective sites for manned exploration. This investigation, therefore, concluded that terrestrial lava tubes can be leveraged for radiation shielding and, accordingly, that the candidate lava tubes on Mars (as well ...

Medical students' initial experiences of the dissection room and interaction with body donors: A qualitative study of professional identity formation, educational benefits, and the experience of Pasifika students

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, EarlyView.
Abstract The first experience of medical students in the dissecting room (DR) likely influences professional identity formation (PIF). Sparse data exist exploring how exposure to the DR and body donors without undertaking dissection influences PIF, or how culture may influence this experience.

Lava channel formation during the 2001 eruption on Mount Etna: evidence for mechanical erosion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We report the direct observation of a peculiar lava channel that was formed near the base of a parasitic cone during the 2001 eruption on Mount Etna. Erosive processes by flowing lava are commonly attributed to thermal erosion. However, field evidence strongly suggests that models of thermal erosion cannot explain the formation of this channel.

Thermal impacts of basaltic lava flows to buried infrastructure: workflow to determine the hazard

open access: yesJournal of Applied Volcanology, 2020
Lava flows can cause substantial physical damage to elements of the built environment. Often, lava flow impacts are assumed to be binary, i.e. cause complete damage if the lava flow and asset are in contact, or no damage if there is no direct contact ...

Nature, origin and significance of a clayey cave deposit: Relationship between karst and Oligocene/Miocene tephra (NW Dinarides)

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, EarlyView.
A limestone cave in the NW Dinarides exhibits an anomalous presence of montmorillonite clay, not commonly found in surrounding caves, posing questions about its origin and age. Analysis reveals a composition similar to weathered tephra from the Smrekovec Volcanic Complex, suggesting transport by north‐east winds.
